The Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government has made significant strides in improving the state’s education system, one of the key initiatives being the ‘Operation Kayakalp’ scheme. Launched in June 2018, this program aims to revamp primary schools across the state to make them more functional and appealing. With a focus on enhancing accessibility for disabled individuals, the scheme has led to substantial improvements in schools in every district of Uttar Pradesh.

So far, 19 primary and upper primary schools have undergone extensive development, transforming them into model schools with five-star ratings. These schools now boast improved basic facilities, including separate washrooms, running water, submersible pumps, interlocking tiles, handwashing stations, internal electrical wiring, and plantation, creating a smart environment.

The rejuvenation efforts have resulted in a notable increase in student enrollment in these schools. Moreover, the success of ‘Operation Kayakalp’ has caught the attention of other state governments, who are considering adopting this model in their respective states.

Under this scheme, schools are being upgraded with new blackboards, freshly painted buildings, upgraded furniture, additional rooms, boundary walls, and gates. In some schools, separate washrooms, handwashing stations, and proper seating for students in classrooms have been added. The schools in Hapur, Shravasti, Pilibhit, and Bareilly now rival private schools in terms of their facilities.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath highlighted the significant progress made in the state’s education sector over the past seven years. Under ‘Operation Kayakalp’, work has been done to improve the infrastructure in 132,000 schools of the Basic Education Council, resulting in over 4 million new children enrolling in these schools.

How has Operation Kayakalp improved primary school enrollment?

Operation Kayakalp has significantly improved primary school enrollment in Uttar Pradesh by upgrading school infrastructure, installing essential facilities, and fostering a green environment. By renovating 19 primary and upper primary schools, the scheme has transformed them into model institutions with five-star ratings. These improvements include better accessibility for disabled individuals, upgraded basic amenities, and separate washrooms. As a result, there has been a noticeable increase in student enrollment in these schools. The success of Operation Kayakalp has also gained attention from other state governments, considering adopting this model in their respective states.

What infrastructure upgrades are part of Operation Kayakalp?

Operation Kayakalp includes various infrastructure upgrades for primary schools in Uttar Pradesh. These upgrades involve installing blackboards, painting buildings with fresh colors, and upgrading furniture. Additionally, efforts are made to construct extra rooms, boundary walls, and gates in schools. Separate washrooms are built, and running water, submersible pumps, and interlocking tiles in different areas like kitchens and classrooms are installed. Handwashing stations, internal electrical wiring, and plantation are also added to create a smart environment. The schools in Hapur, Shravasti, Pilibhit, and Bareilly now have facilities comparable to private schools, including gates, boundary walls, tiled floors, playgrounds, digital classrooms with libraries, separate toilets, handwashing stations, and proper seating in classrooms.
