The National Medical Commission (NMC) has officially approved the establishment of seven new medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh, set to commence their MBBS programs in the academic year 2024-25. This significant development follows a discussion between Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union Health Minister JP Nadda regarding the recognition of additional medical institutions in the state. The newly sanctioned colleges are located in Bijnor, Bulandshahr, Kushinagar, Pilibhit, Sultanpur, Kanpur Dehat, and Lalitpur.

With this expansion, Uttar Pradesh will see an increase of 600 MBBS seats, contributing to a total of 10,500 MBBS seats available across government, private, and Public-Private Partnership (PPP) medical colleges in the state. This move aims to enhance medical education and healthcare access in the region.

According to Kinjal Singh, the Director General of Medical Education, the Letters of Permission for these new autonomous state medical colleges have been issued, allowing for the immediate commencement of counseling for the newly available seats. Additionally, existing government medical colleges in Agra and Meerut will also benefit from increased seat allocations, with Agra Medical College adding 72 seats and Meerut Medical College increasing its capacity by 50 seats.

In the private sector, the PPP-mode medical colleges in Shamli, Maharajganj, and Sambhal have received permission to add 150, 150, and 50 MBBS seats, respectively. A new private institution in Gorakhpur has also been granted permission for 50 MBBS seats, while GS Medical College in Hapur will increase its capacity by 100 seats, bringing its total to 250.

Overall, the total number of MBBS seats in Uttar Pradesh has increased from 3,828 to 4,550 for the upcoming academic session, marking a substantial enhancement in medical education opportunities within the state. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure and training future medical professionals.

As the state prepares for this influx of new medical students, it is essential for prospective candidates to stay informed about the admission process, which is primarily conducted through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). With the growing number of medical colleges, aspiring doctors have more opportunities than ever to pursue their dreams in the field of medicine.
