This interview with Prof Renu Vig provides insights into Panjab University’s endeavors to address faculty shortages, implement NEP-2023, and shape the future of education. The university’s commitment to preparing students for the challenges of a changing world is evident through its innovative approach to curriculum development and its focus on practical learning.

Chandigarh, September 3, 2023 – Panjab University (PU), a prominent educational institution in Chandigarh, is grappling with a significant faculty shortage of 45%, resulting in adverse effects on academic performance. Vice-Chancellor Prof Renu Vig discussed the challenges and initiatives in an exclusive interview with The Indian Express, shedding light on the university’s efforts to align with the National Education Policy (NEP)-2023 and prepare students for the evolving demands of the modern world.

Navigating the Political Landscape

Addressing recent restrictions on politicians’ entry to the campus, Prof Renu Vig clarified that while politicians’ access has been limited, it hasn’t been completely banned. The move is aimed at maintaining law and order on the campus and preventing disruptions, especially in the crowded Student Centre. Collaborating with UT Police, the university is taking measures to ensure the smooth conduct of the students’ council elections.

The Faculty Shortage Challenge

Acknowledging the critical faculty shortage of 45%, Prof Renu Vig highlighted the adverse impact on academic performance. Some departments, like foreign languages, rely on a lone faculty member, prompting the hiring of temporary faculty to bridge the gap. To enhance student performance, the university is actively working to fill these faculty positions by advertising vacant posts.

Embracing NEP-2023 for Future-Ready Education

Regarding NEP-2023 implementation, Prof Renu Vig stated that Panjab University has already adopted the policy across all its departments, surpassing the four-year timeframe set by the UGC. In addition, the university is introducing a portfolio of approximately 100 short-term courses within a year, aligning with NEP’s focus on equipping students to navigate a dynamic world. These courses encompass a range of subjects, from data science and robotics to artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, machine learning, and renewable energy. By offering both theoretical and practical components, the university aims to elevate admissions and students’ rankings.

Ensuring Self-Sustainability

Prof Renu Vig highlighted that some departments are partially self-sustainable through a slightly higher fee structure, enabling them to generate resources and support themselves financially.

UILS Affiliation Dispute

The interview also touched on the University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS) affiliation issue. Prof Renu Vig clarified that this matter revolves around a dispute among faculty members regarding the director’s position. The case is currently in the legal system, with hearings concluded and a decision pending. Due to the legal nature of the matter, the university’s involvement is limited to the legal proceedings.
