Speaking at the 165th convocation address of the University of Madras, held at Anna University’s Vivekananda Auditorium, she highlighted Tamil Nadu’s historical eminence as a cradle of civilization and culture, with the esteemed Sangam literature being a cherished heritage of India. She praised the wisdom enshrined in Tirukkural, guiding generations for centuries, and acknowledged Tamil Nadu’s pivotal role in the inception and spread of the great Bhakti tradition of poetry.
The President also lauded the remarkable temple architecture, statues, and sculptures of Tamil Nadu, a testament to human excellence. She took pride in the fact that the University of Madras showcased gender equality, with 50% of its 1,85,000 students and 70% of the 105 students who received medals being girls. Investing in girls’ education, she remarked, was tantamount to investing in the nation’s progress, as educated women make substantial contributions to the economy, exhibit leadership in various sectors, and positively impact society.
Drawing attention to the university’s prestigious alumni, including Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, Shri V.V. Giri, Shri Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, Shri R. Venkataraman, Shri K.R. Narayanan, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Rajaji, and Nobel Laureates C.V. Raman and S. Chandrasekhar, President Murmu urged the alumni to play a pivotal role in nurturing young students and transforming the institution into a global center of excellence. She encouraged the university to engage with its alumni and seek their cooperation for its betterment.
