Delhi University continues to evolve its academic landscape with a slew of transformative decisions made during the recent 1267th meeting of the Executive Council (EC) held on August 25. Chaired by Vice Chancellor Professor Yogesh Singh, the meeting saw the university’s commitment to inclusivity, skill enhancement, and forward-thinking educational initiatives.

Extending Horizons in DUSU Elections

One standout decision involves the extension of eligibility for students aspiring to participate in the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections. Undergraduates now have the opportunity to engage in electoral processes until the age of 25, thanks to a 3-year age relaxation. Postgraduate students, on the other hand, can now contest till the age of 28. This exceptional provision, however, will be in effect solely for the current academic year.

Ancient Wisdom Meets Modern Education

To enrich the educational experience, the Value Addition Courses (VAC) Committee’s suggestions were embraced. This paves the way for the introduction of Vedic Maths-III, Vedic Maths-IV, and VAC: National Cadet Corps-III value addition courses for the academic year 2022-2023. This fusion of traditional Vedic mathematics with contemporary learning exemplifies the university’s commitment to holistic education.

Skill Enhancement for Tomorrow’s Leaders

The EC’s endorsement of various Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC) underscores the university’s focus on equipping students with practical skills. Ranging from “Basic of Food Science and Nutrition” to “Spoken Persian: Elementary Level,” these courses align with real-world demands and foster industry-ready graduates. Vice Chancellor Professor Yogesh Singh highlighted the potential of these courses to produce graduates capable of spearheading ventures or excelling in fields like food and drug evaluation centers.

A Canvas for Creativity: PhD in Fine Arts

The Faculty of Music and Fine Arts takes a pioneering step forward with the introduction of a PhD program in Fine Arts for the academic session 2023-2024. Striking a balance between creativity and academic rigor, eligibility criteria include securing a minimum of 55% marks or 9 credits in coursework.

Unveiling the Future: MBA in Business Analytics

The meeting unveiled a trailblazing course – MBA (Business Analytics) – within the Department of Commerce, offering 76 seats. The council underscores the university’s commitment to inclusivity by reserving quotas for SC/ST, LGBTQ+, CW, and PWBD candidates in line with university guidelines.

Navigating Challenges in Pursuit of Excellence

While the university ushers in these transformative changes, concerns over the implementation of self-financed courses resonated during the meeting. Members stressed the importance of striking a balance to prevent undue financial burdens on students.

The decisions made during this EC meeting echo the university’s commitment to holistic student development, from fostering ancient knowledge to incubating future business leaders. As Delhi University continues to evolve, its strides in education pave the way for a more diverse, skilled, and empowered student body prepared for the challenges of tomorrow.
