Aligarh, June 21: Various reclining, standing, inverted, twisting, and balancing Yoga Asanas were performed by the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) faculty members, students and non-teaching staff to mark the ‘International Day of Yoga’ on the theme, ‘Yoga for Wellness’.

They performed the Asanas through digital and virtual instructions given by experts of the Department of Physical Education, in line with the Government of India guidelines, sans mass gatherings to curb the pandemic.

“It is imperative to for all to understand the importance of Yoga during the Covid pandemic. It is playing a very significant role in post-Covid rehabilitation. The immunity can be improved and fitness can be maintained by performing Yoga Asanas during isolation and quarantine period”, said AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof Tariq Mansoor.

He added that this age-old discipline of saints and sages deals with the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health of the individual and society. It is an integrated system of self-transformation giving spiritual enlightenment and other benefits.

“People should do Yoga to reduce the risk for injury, soothe the mind and lower the stress levels,” said Prof Mansoor.

Prof Zamirullah Khan (Chairman, Department of Physical Education) pointed out that Yoga increases your flexibility, builds strength, improves body posture, reduces stress and maintains blood pressure among other benefits. The rewards of Yoga for disease prevention and health promotion are also well known.

He also delivered the welcome address.

Speaking on the practice of Yoga Asanas, Prof Rajendra Singh said that all Yoga poses if performed correctly tone the muscles, develop flexibility and improve posture and spinal alignment.

“Yoga is a special way of exercise that improves the stability in body, which is of utmost importance for complete fitness. Overall, it helps in the development of physical, mental and spiritual being”, said Prof Brij Bhushan Singh.

The Yoga Asanas were demonstrated under the supervision of Dr Naushad Waheed Ansari by Vineet, Alish and Neha Verma. 

Dr Merajuddin Faridi conducted the programme and extended the vote of thanks.

Dr Arshad Bari coordinated the live Facebook session, joined by over 200 viewers.
