Baridua, 9th Mile, Meghalaya, 19th June 2021: The Department of Library and Information Science, University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya in collaboration with Krishna Kanta Handique Library, Gauhati University organized a National Webinar on June 19th 2021 on the theme ‘Measurement of Research Metrics’. The webinar was graced by the Vice Chancellor of USTM Prof. G. D Sharma along with esteemed invited guest namely Prof. Sanjay Kumar Singh (Librarian i/c & HoD, KKHL & DLISc, G.U.), Dr. S. Ravikumar (Asst. Prof., DLISc, NEHU, Shillong), Dr. Shri Ram (Librarian, Sikkim Central University, Sikkim). The program was successfully organized with more than 460 plus registered participants from the parts of the country and abroad such as Nepal, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Philippines and Kazakhstan.
The opening remarks and introduction of the program was addressed by Vice Chancellor Prof. G. D Sharma on the related theme. He spoke about the importance of research measurement in academic environment and how it helps students, scholars and professionals to find the quality and authentic research sources. He also gave a brief outline on the significance of Research metrics for selection of research papers for conducting research study from renowned databases like: Web of Science and SCOPUS. He also stressed upon the use of Journal Impact Factor for effective selection of journals for publication of Research articles.
The Keynote speaker Prof. Sanjay Kumar Singh, Librarian i/c and Head of the Department of Library and Information Science, Gauhati University gave a very insightful talk on the significance of sound philosophy for writing of research paper. He highlighted on : Research ethics for publication of research papers in journals, quantity of publication of scholarly journals, Avoiding of redundancy and self- citations in research writing, Proper reference and acknowledge of the research, Bibliometric, Arithmetic and Statistical techniques.
Dr. S. Ravikumar, Assistant Professor; Department of Library and Information Science, North Eastern Hill University, Shillong gave an interactive and insightful presentation on the topic: “Evaluation of Journal Impact and Maximizing Readership Count” by covering areas like importance of databases like Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar for extracting data for the purpose of Research measurement, Evaluation of Journal Impact and maximizing readership count, emphasis on Citation Metrics, Journal Metrics, Research Metrics, Collaboration and Benchmarking, Institution metrics and Almetrics, importance of h- index, G- Index, i10 index in research. He also stressed on the use of platforms like FigShare Repository and DRYAD Repository to increase readership count for an article.
Dr. Shri Ram also put forward some of the important points on the topic ‘Reference Styles and Citation Databases’ . he emphasis on Importance of selecting peer reviewed journals, Proper methodology for conducting data extraction from different databases, Use of different software tools like VOS viewer, MS Excel, BibExcel, Hist Cite, and Cite Space is very important for proper analysis of data for research measurement, PlumX analysis of research articles whose Metrics help answer the questions and tell the important elements about research like Citations, Usage, Captures, Mentions, Social Media, The urgency to use the global digital repositories like FigShare, DRYAD`
