India's first e-library of ancient manuscripts to open in Ahmedabad's Lalbhai Dalpatbhai Institute of Indology

Former President Abdul Kalam will be inaugurating this e-library that has more than 5 lakh pages on November 11, 2011. Manuscripts dating back to 1,200 years are available in a digitally. These books are variety of topics such language, religion, history, culture, maths, astronomy and astrology, etc. It took 3 years and 40 lakh to complete this massive project.

"We are the first institute in the country to digitize such rare books and manuscripts on a large scale,'' said Jitendra Shah, director of the institute.

Some of these manuscripts are written in gold. To preserve all these manuscripts, serious efforts are being taken by the institute by developing electronic register and setting up a preservation and restoration laboratory.

The main theme of this campaign is to make them digitally literate. The campaign was inaugurated in the presence of women's movement "Gulabi Gang" leader Sampat Pal. "The two-month Helping Women Get Online campaign (HWGO) in Uttar Pradesh aims to create awareness about the benefits of Internet for women and assist them to get online through basic knowledge on how to use the Internet," Google marketing director Sandeep Menon told reporters.
