Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), Bangalore invites applications for admissions to Ph.D. Programme & Integrated M.Tech.-Ph.D. (Tech.) Programme for the academic year 2019.

Ph.D. Programme & Integrated M.Tech.-Ph.D. (Tech.) Programme admissions at Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), Bangalore.

Courses Offered:

(i) Ph.D., jointly with Pondicherry Central University, and
(ii) Integrated M.Tech. - Ph.D., jointly with University of Calcutta.

Ph.D. Programme & Integrated M.Tech.-Ph.D. (Tech.) Eligibility Criteria:

Interested candidates should fulfill following eligibility criteria:
a) Consistent academic record with 60% or more from Standard X onwards.
b) A valid GATE(Physics) for Ph. D Programme / GATE for M. Tech.Ph. D Programme. OR
c) Valid JEST qualification. OR
d) Valid UGC-CSIR-NET qualification.
e) Maximum 25 years as on January 01, 2019.

PhD: MSc/Integrated MSc in Applied Physics/Engg Physics; Applied Mathematics; Astronomy; Electronics; Photonics/Optics; Physics; ME/M.Tech. Integrated ME/M.Tech in Applied Physics/Engg Physics; Computer Science, Electrical; Electronics; Instrumentation; Photonics/Optics/Opto-electronics; RadioPhysics and Electronics; M.Phil in Applied Physics; Instrumentation; Mathematics; Photonics/Optics

Integrated M-Tech.- PhD: MSc/Integrated MSc in Applied Physics/Engg Physics; Applied Mathematics; Electronics; Physics; BE/B.Tech.in Computer Science, Electrical, Electronics, Instrumentation, Mechanical; B.Tech. (Post BSc Hons.) in Optics and Optoelectronics; Radio Physics and Electronics

Qualifying degree must be completed latest by June 2019. Candidates must have consistent academic record with 60% or more from Standard X onwards (ii) A valid GATE(Physics) for Ph. D Programme / GATE for M. Tech.Ph D Programme or valid JEST qualification or valid UGC-CSIR-NET qualification.

Application Procedure for Ph.D. Programme & Integrated M.Tech.-Ph.D. (Tech.):

• Upload your recent photograph.
• Give details of your marks or grade point average (GPA) in all the examinations written so far. In case of GPA, normalize to 100%; for example if your GPA is out of 10, multiply by 10.
• If you are currently studying in a degree programme, mention the expected month and year of its completion, and enter the marks received up to the latest semester with declared results.
• Before starting to fill the application form, make sure that you have softcopies of your photo and other necessary documents. Upload the scanned / soft copies of your mark sheets and certificates along with this application form on the preview page.

The East India Company having resolved to establish an observatory at Madras for promoting the knowledge of Astronomy, Geography and Navigation in India, Sir Charles Oakeley, then President of the Council had the building for the observatory completed by 1792. The Madras series of observations had commenced in 1787(1786)* through the efforts of a member of the Madras Government - William Petrie - who had in his possession two three-inch achromatic telescopes, two astronomical clocks with compound pendulums and an excellent transit instrument.
