About

Dental Sciences is the branch of medicine that involves the study, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases, disorders and conditions of the oral cavity.

It is considered an important branch of medicine for overall health. Dental treatment is done by the dental team, which have dentist and dental auxiliaries. Most dentists do private practice, although some work in hospitals and institutions like prisons, armed forces bases, etc.

Dentists can carry out the majority of dental treatments such as restorative (fillings, crowns,bridges), prosthetic (dentures), endodontic (root canal) therapy, periodontal (gum) therapy, and extraction of teeth. Dentists also give medicines such as antibiotics,sedatives, etc used for treatment of patient with dental problem.

Dentists also help in prevention of oral diseases through proper hygiene and regular checkups. Problems in the oral cavity indicates systemic diseases such as osteoporosis, diabetes, or cancer. The concept that oral health can have an impact on systemic health and disease is referred to as "oral-systemic health".
