Clinical research is a branch of healthcare science that checks the safety and effectiveness of medications, devices, diagnostic products and treatment intended for human beings. These clinically tested medicines may be used for prevention, treatment, diagnosis or for relieving symptoms of a disease.

The term clinical research refers to the entire process of inception of any test article in the lab to its introduction to the consumer market and beyond. Once the the molecule is tested in the lab, it is subjected to preclinical studies or animal studies where different aspects of the test article are studied.

Clinical trials of new drugs involve four phases. Each phase of the drug approval process is treated as a separate clinical trial. The drug-development process passes through all four phases over many years. If the drug successfully passes through Phases I, II, and III, it will usually be approved by the national regulatory authority for use in the general public. Phase IV are 'post-approval' studies.

Clinical research scientists work in hospitals, universities and pharmaceutical labs. Safety precautions must be followed and protective gear must be used when clinical researchers are dealing with potentially infectious samples.

Clinical Research Degree, offered by medical colleges are of three types, undergraduate, postgraduate & PhD level. These courses prepare students to design, evaluate and discover new medications to treat new health problems.
