Department of Biotechnology
B.E. (Biotechnology) is a multidisciplinary program involving advances in Life Sciences and Engineering. The Department offers courses in frontier and emerging areas of Biotechnology with orientation towards new product and process development. School of Biotechnology has a mission to impart quality education and provides a vibrant environment for the advancement of knowledge.
Established in 2002, the Department ushers the student into an exciting world of Biotechnology, which emerged as major global business in recent years. The Department has well qualified faculty members and state of the art laboratory infrastructure with equipments like Phase Contrast Microscope, UV-Visible Spectrophotometer, Freeze drier, High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), PCR, Tangential flow filtration unit, Ultrafiltration Unit, laboratory-scale Fermenter, etc. The Department has been recognized as a Research Centre and is actively engaged in research with thrust areas like Bioprocess Technology, Enzyme Technology, Nanobiotechnology, and Bioinformatics.
The Department has an excellent industry-academia interaction which has been reflected in the success of alumni working in various industries like Biocon Ltd, Novartis (India), Richcore Life Science Bangalore, FDC Ltd, RadPharm Scientific (Australia), Unichem Laboratories, Infosys Technologies Ltd , Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Accenture, Amazon India, IBM Bangalore, Tech Mahindra, etc. The department houses several incubation centres (Navya Biologicals, Prajna Biosciences, Biosyl Technolgies, etc) and actively involved in various industry-institute interactions.

Research & Development / Topic
The Department of Biotechnology is engaged in research activity focussed around bioprocess technology and its related applications. The Department has well-equipped laboratory infrastructure, expertise and supporting system to facilitate research activities. The Department has received funds for several student projects and competitions (Motorola Scholar Programme, KSCST, VGST, etc.)
Special Initiatives
=> Orientation for various competitive exams (GATE and UGC-CSIR) and provision of study materials.
=> Provision to engage the students in Industry - Institute Internship and training program during their final semester, as part of their academic curriculum to promote employability.
=> Theme-based Mini and Minor projects focussed on basic skill-set development with employment perspective of Biotechnology companies.
Special facilities available with the program
=> Hands-on training and use of fermentor
=> Exposure to state-of-the-art analytical facilities (HPLC)
=> Training for bioprocess designing and optimization by the use of advanced tolos (Superpro)
