Sree Kerala Varma College is located in Thrissur of Kerala State, India. It was founded in 1947 by Kerala Varma, the Maharaja of erstwhile Kochi State. The college was initially under the Madras University. Now it is affiliated to the University of Calicut.The college on the outskirts of the city of Thrissur has been a centre of liberal and socially responsible thought and activity for the 60 years of its history. The college is a leading educational institution in Kerala State. It has about 2200 students on its rolls in 16 under graduate and 8 post graduate courses, with 105 members of teaching staff and more than 54 members of non-teaching staff.The motto "Asthu Vrittam Subham Sada" ( Pure be My Life for Ever) envisaged by the former Maharaja of Cochin, is the vision, leading light and constant source of inspiration. The college endeavours to preserve the best traditions of liberal higher education, ensuring full freedom of expression to encounter multifarious ideological preoccupations. In both curricular and co- curricular activities the college aims at bringing out the best talents of the students.The college has taken up the mission with full commitment to bring up the students hailing from semi urban and rural areas, with poor socio economic backgrounds, on a par with those from better endowed urban areas. The college seeks to make the students competent to face the challenges of modern world with full confidence and social commitment. Sree kerala Varma College, Thrissur is now in its post-golden jubilee period the college was started on the eve of Indian Independence on August 11th 1947 Its first affiliation was as a college in Madras University
in 1972 it celebrated its Silver Jubilee...in 1997- the golden Jubilee
From very small beginnings, the college on the eve of its 50th birthday became the largest institution in terms of student enrolment and teachers in the Calicut University...

As the student strength increased so too the number and variety of courses of study in arts, science and commerce...
In the same way, from courses in the degree level the college introduced in course of time post graduate courses
From the academic year 2001-2002, the college does not have any pre-degree students, because the students at +2 level are now in the school system...

After a period when the college was bursting in its seams, it has now become a very compact body... the student enrolment is around 1500...
At the degree level there are 16 disciplines, at the postgraduate level it is 8 disciplines

Every one admits now that the level of higher education in Kerala is very poor.

That means that so much has to be done to improve the quality of learning and one hopes that the college will take this as a challenge as well as an opportunity and make itself a good center of excellence in higher studies
