    Medical College Hospital at Arpookara started functionning on 14.04.1970 with a humble begining. [ Later the Medical College campus and surrounding locality were named as 'GANDHINAGAR' from 1974 ]. Construction of ABC and EFG blocks of MCH were completed during 1969 & 1970 respectively. As an initial step, General Medicine & Surgery Departments were shifted from Dist. Hospital, Kottayam to Arpookara leaving the other departments continue to function at Dist. Hospital to Medical College Hospital Gandhinagar from 1970 to 1975.The bed strength was 837. Gradually, the main hospital has grown up and at present the bed strength is 1471 with 25 clinical departments including all speciality and super speciality with all diagnostic and therapeutic facilities.

    Medical College Kottayam (MCK) is one of the five government financed medical colleges in the state of Kerala, located at the southern tip of India. All the facilities and consultations here including major surgeries like open heart surgeries are absolutely free. Around hundred candidates are selected here for under graduate training in medical science each year after a highly competetive entrance examination out of a pool of approximately 10000 candidates. Medical College Kottayam also offers fellowships in various specialties including Surgery, General Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Social and Preventive Medicine, Plastic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, Nephrology. Various paramedical courses as well as excellent five year program in nursing is offered here.
    Kerala state is recognised by WHO and various experts in acheving health parameters equivalent to that of North America in spite of limited resources. WHO has proposed a Kerala model development plan for developing countries with resource constraints. Medical College Kottayam takes pride in being a part of the long years of hardwork in achieving this remarkable feat.

    MCK has been successful in getting its graduates into prestigious fellowships in various institutes spread all through India and abroad. A large fraction of MCK graduates now enters a primary health care track, following a 3 year General Medicine fellowship.

    More than hundred research papers are published from MCK annually. Each undergraduate has to publish a research paper as part of the training. Numerous papers have been presented by MCK students and faculty in the recent years in various national and international conferences MCK also participates in various clinical drug trials organised internationally.

    Kottayam Medical College Alumni Association offers a well equipped computer lab and database search facility at MCK. It also offers CME courses regularly. Information available at [email protected]

    Our Cardiology Head of Department, Dr Rajan Manjuran has been elected as "the best doctor of Kerala" in the year 1997.

    Our Nephrology Chairman Dr Kasi Vishveswaran is internationally recognised in his field and is an author of reputed textbooks in nephrology.

    Our Cardiothoracic Surgery Chairman Dr Chandramohan, P leads a dedicated and well trained team which serves the need of large section of people belonging to mid-Kerala.

    Our past Obstetrics and Gynecology Chairman Dr Rajan, R a natural innovator, devised various techniques in treating female infertility.He authored many textbooks in laparoscopy as well as use of ultrasound in O&G. Our past Internal Medicine Chairman Dr Jayakumar, R is an expert in endocrinology and leads a WHO funded research on diabetes mellitus. Dr. Vaidyanathan S, a well acclaimed expert in Vascular Surgery and a great teacher and philosopher is influential in molding a well trained and humane young generation of surgeons at MCK.

    The Infectious Disease Department here is well equipped for effective preventive care and management of various infectious disease including the threat of HIV infection which is fast spreading in the subcontinent. The State Physician Responsible for AIDS Management,Dr. Sajith Kumar, R. ( [email protected] ) an expert in this subject is a faculty of MCK. Dr. Ekbal, B. ( [email protected] ) , our Neurosurgery Chairman does a a lot of work on the social aspects of modern medicine. MCK is proud over his appointment as Expert Member in the Kerala State Planning Commission.

    MCK takes in around 100 MBBS students, 77 Postgraduate degree & diploma students, 30 Pharmacy Diploma students, 15 Medical Laboratory Technology Diploma students, 50 BSc Nursing Students and 8 Superspeciality students each year. The present faculty strength of the College is about 300.

    Medical College, Kottayam started functioning as the third of its kind in the state of Kerala in December 1962. The campus is located 8 kilometers north of Kottayam a small agrarian township located in Central Travancore. The Medical College Kottayam which was functioning in District Hospital, Kottayam from 1962 to 1970 was shifted to Arpookkara in April 1970 at the first stage. At the second stage in 1975 all the clinical departments were shifted to the Gandhinagar campus. The same year the Children's hospital (Institute of Child Health) was taken over and added to Medical College Kottayam. A new B block (administrative block) was started in 1985. In 1996 the the C block was added to the complex housing departments of Pharmacology, Pathology, Microbiology and also a full fledged library and computer and internet facilities.

    The collegiate institutions attached to Medical College Kottayam are Medical College Hospital (MCH), Institute of Child Health (ICH), Nursing College (CNK), Kottayam and Medical College Health Center, Ettumanoor (KMCHC). Through over 35 years the campus has grown into a small township with in house banking facilities, Cooperative store, Post Office, canteens, hotels, lodging facilities as well as subsidized hostels and accommodations for the faculty.

    The bed strength of the Medical College Hospital alone is 1101. The present facilities available in the Hospital include: round the clock Casualty service, Blood Bank facility, modern lab and imaging services, Colour doppler, TMT, Holter Monitor,Haemodyalisis, Facilities for Endoscopic & laparoscopic procedures, Facilities for Open Heart Surgery, Specialised Pain Clinic under Anaesthesiology, Computerised Pulmonary Function Lab under Chest & TB, Cardiac Rehabilitation Centre under Cardiology,Specialised Trauma Care Centre, Advanced Intensive Care Units for Surgery, Medicine,Cardiac services, Neurosurgery & Plastic Surgery.

    Medical College, Kottayam is constantly in the process of upgrading its facilities, services and academic excellence. Advanced imaging facilities and sophisticated equipment for a technologically competent, at the same time humane health care has already been established here. Being a hundred percent subsidized institution, Medical College Kottayam depends almost entirely on government grants for its budgetary support.
