The Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST) is a national level qualifying examination for admissions to Ph.D. programmes in Physics at premier Indian research institutions and a Ph.D. programme in Theoretical Computer Science at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences.

Using JEST results, each institute will call a limited number of candidates for its own selection procedure depending, on its requirements. All selected candidates will receive Research Fellowships from the respective institutes.

Important Dates

The online registration will commence from November 2016
Final date for submitting the application form December 2016
The examination will be conducted on February 2017


JEST covers five different programs, the eligibility criteria is different for each program.

  • Ph.D. Programme in Physics:
  • Ph.D Theoretical Computer Science/Neuroscience/Computational Biology:
    • The Candidate should have done M.Sc./ M.E. / M.Tech. / M.C.A. in Computer Science and related disciplines, and should be interested in the mathematical aspects of computer science.
    • The Candidate should have done M.Sc (Physics/ Mathematics), B.E/ B.Tech/ M.C.A in Computer Science for Ph.D. in Neuroscience at NBRC. /li>
    • The Candidate should have done M.Sc./ M.E. / M.Tech. / MCA in any engineering or science discipline, with good mathematical skills and a strong interest in biological problems for Ph.D. in Computational Biology at IMSc.
  • Integrated M.Sc. / M.Tech - Ph.D Programme
    • The candidates should have done BSc that will be considered for the Integrated M.Sc, PhD Program in Physics at SNBNCBS, HRI, NCRA-TIFR, ICTS-TIFR , IISER-Pune, TIFR-TCIS.
    • Candidates who have done unhitched Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Science, Computer Sci., Statistics and Engg IT will likewise be considered for affirmation in PhD Physics, Theoretical Computer Science (a portion of a coordinated PhD Program).
  • Integrated M.Tech - Ph.D. Programme at IIA: The Candidate should be graduate with M.Sc. (Physics / Applied Physics) / Post-B.Sc. (Hons) in Optics and Optoelectronics / Radio Physics and Electronics / B.E. / B.Tech. degree in subjects mentioned above will be considered. For more details, candidates should visit the official website of IIA.
  • Integrated Ph.D. Programme at IISER, Thiruvananthapuram:
    A Candidate with bachelor's degree in Physics / Technology / Engineering is eligible to apply for the Integrated Ph.D. programme in Physics at IISER, Thiruvananthapuram.

How to Apply?

For Neuroscience / Physics / Theoretical Computer Science, the candidates can apply for Online.

The online application form and application process is available at the official website of JEST - JEST 2017 application form can only be submitted via online mode only.

Application Fees

The cost of JEST Application is Rs. 300. It is Rs 150 for SC/ST applicants. The application fee is required to be paid along with the application which can be paid online​​ using Debit/Credit cards and Net-banking. Payment by any other mode will NOT be accepted.

JEST Exam Pattern

The questions are based on the general syllabi​ of graduation and post-graduation level courses offered by various Indian universities and institutions. JEST (Joint Entrance Screening Test) question papers are normally not made available.

JEST Admit Card

The JEST Admit card will be available in the JEST webpage from 3rd week of January, 2017. The candidates are required to bring a printout of the downloaded JEST admit card along with a photo-ids for entry into the examination centre. Admit cards will NOT be sent by post/email.

JEST Result

The JEST score is valid for only one year.
