Eligibility Criteria

Minimum Educational Qualifications for Ph.D.: (For Regular Research Scholars:)

  • PhD in Engineering: Candidates eligible for admission to the PhD program in Engineering include those with a Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology with a commendable academic record, a Master’s degree by Research in Engineering/Technology with a commendable academic record, or a 5-year Dual Degree in Engineering or a 5-year BS+MS Dual degree from a Centrally Funded Technical Institute with a commendable academic record.
  • Students who have completed a 2-year M.Sc. from IITs (entry through JAM) with a grade of 8.0 or higher are exempted from qualifying in National Level Examinations.
  • Additionally, candidates with a Master’s degree in Sciences and exceptional academic merit may be considered for relevant Engineering disciplines as decided by the admitting departments. They must hold a valid GATE score or UGC-JRF/NET/CSIR-JRF or equivalent qualification in the relevant area for the year of registration.
  • Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology and over 5 years of relevant work experience after obtaining a Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology may have the test score requirement waived by the Selection Committee.
  • PhD in Sciences: Eligible candidates for admission to the PhD program in Sciences must hold a Master’s degree in Sciences with a commendable academic record and possess a valid GATE score or UGC-JRF/NET/CSIR-JRF/NBHM/INSPIRE or equivalent qualification in the relevant area for the current year.
  • Furthermore, candidates with a Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology or a 5-year BS+MS Dual degree/5-year Integrated degree from a Centrally Funded Technical Institute with a commendable academic record are eligible.
  • Similar to the Engineering program, students who have completed a 2-year M.Sc. from IITs (entry through JAM) with a grade of 8.0 or higher are exempted from qualifying in National Level Examinations.
  • Additionally, candidates who achieve a CGPA of more than 8.0 in M.Sc. in Science Departments of IIT Madras may be admitted directly to the PhD program in Sciences through departmental level interviews.
  • PhD in Humanities and Social Sciences: Eligible candidates for admission to the PhD program in Humanities and Social Sciences include those with a Master’s degree/dual degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline and must qualify UGC-NET or JRF/CSIR-JRF/GATE Score or equivalent qualification in the relevant area for the current year. Alternatively, international level postgraduate admission examinations such as GRE (Non-HTRA) are also accepted.
  • Candidates with a Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology or a 5-year BS+MS Dual degree/5-year Integrated degree from a Centrally Funded Technical Institute with a commendable academic record are also eligible.
  • Those with at least 3 years of experience in research/industry may be considered in lieu of the above examinations, applicable only for Non-HTRA candidates.
  • PhD in Management: Eligible candidates for admission to the PhD program in Management must hold a Master’s degree or 2 years PG Diploma in a relevant discipline, along with a Bachelor’s degree with a commendable academic record (minimum five years of undergraduate and postgraduate education). Alternatively, candidates with a five-year integrated master’s degree/dual degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline with a commendable academic record are eligible.
  • They must also qualify in national level examinations such as GATE/CAT/UGC-JRF/NET/CSIR-JRF or equivalent, or international level postgraduate admission examinations such as GMAT/GRE (Non-HTRA). Alternatively, those with at least 5 years of managerial experience may be considered in lieu of the above examinations, applicable only for Non-HTRA candidates.
  • Candidates with a Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology with a commendable academic record or a Master’s degree by Research in Engineering/Technology in a relevant discipline are exempted from qualifying in National level examinations. Additionally, candidates with an MBA or 2-year PG diploma from a Centrally Funded Technical Institute (CFTI) with a CGPA of 8 and above are exempted from qualifying in National level examinations.
  • For Permanent Institute Staff members/Research Scholars under QIP/Research Scholars under External Registration/Research Scholars under Part-time Registration: For Research Scholars falling under the mentioned categories, the minimum educational qualifications are the same as prescribed for Regular Research Scholars. However, a valid GATE score or CSIR-JRF/UGC-JRF/NET or equivalent qualification may not be required in these cases.

Minimum Educational Qualifications for M.S: (For Regular Research Scholars:)

  • M.S. in Engineering : Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology with a valid GATE score or a Master’s degree in appropriate Sciences/Management were eligible with a good academic record and a valid GATE score tenable for the current year in the relevant areas.
  • Candidates having Associate Membership of the following professional bodies will also be eligible for admission to the M.S. program of their parent discipline provided they have a valid GATE score and have passed both parts A and part B of the Membership examinations with a good academic record.
  • The Institution of Engineers (India) (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics, Electronics and Communications), the Aeronautical Society of India, the Indian Institute of Metals, the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Institute of Electronics and Tele-communication Engineering, and other professional bodies approved by the Senate from time to time.
  • Candidates having qualified in MFT (Major Field Test) will also be eligible for admission to the M.S. program if the concerned department opt for it.
  • M.S. in Management : Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in any professional discipline of minimum four years duration or Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline, with a good academic record OR
  • A good score or pass in – a) national level post-graduate admission qualifying examinations such as GATE, b) International level post-graduate admission qualifying examinations such as GMAT/GRE (Non-HTRA), c) at least 3 years of managerial experience in lieu of the qualifying test. (This clause is applicable for Non-HTRA candidates only)
  • Candidates having qualified in MFT (Major Field Test) will also be eligible for admission to the M.S. program if the concerned department opt for it.
  • M.S. in Entrepreneurship : The minimum eligibility requirement for admission will be graduates with a B.Tech/B.E. or any postgraduate degree in appropriate Sciences/Management stream (eg. M.A or M.Com will be eligible; not B.A. or B.Com graduate).
  • The existing admission criteria for Regular HTRA and non-HTRA admissions to be retained. For HTRA, the candidate will need to qualify in GATE or to any of the approved national-level qualifying exams eligible for the scholarship.
  • At the time of accepting an offer of admission, CGPA above or equal to 8.0 for graduates from Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (including IITM) is required for waiving the requirement of qualifying in national level examinations. Under the non-HTRA category, anyone with a B.Tech/B.E. or any postgraduate degree in appropriate Sciences/Management stream can apply.
  • In addition, all candidates must submit a Proposal for a start-up, which will be evaluated by the Screening Committee first, before recommending selected applications to the Admissions/Selection Committee for a one-to-one interview.
  • For Permanent Institute Staff Members/Research Scholars under External Registration / Research Scholars under Part-Time Registration:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology or a Master’s degree in appropriate Sciences/Management stream where eligible with a good academic record.
  • However, valid GATE score or equivalent qualification as applicable for Regular research scholars may not be required in these cases.

  • A printed copy of the application submitted online along with Original and photocopies of relevant certificates/documents.
  • Candidates who wish to apply to multiple departments or research programs should register the individual applications and pay the application fee separately subject to fulfilling the eligibility criteria for applying to the concerned department/research program as mentioned in the research admission brochure & website.
  • Please read the instructions given in the admission brochure carefully before filling up the online application form. After filling the form, you are advised to take a printout of your application and keep the same for your record.

Selection Procedure

  • Eligible candidates possessing the minimum educational qualifications & eligible degrees and satisfying additional and stiffer criteria set by the departments from time to time will be called for a “written test and interview” or “interview” by the Selection Committees of the respective departments.
