Raman Research Institute, Bangalore, is inviting applications from motivated and qualified students for admission to the PhD Program in various research areas for the academic session 2024-25. Established in 1948 by the Indian physicist and Nobel Laureate Sir C V Raman, the institute is engaged in research in basic sciences. It was restructured in 1972 to become an aided autonomous institute receiving funds from the Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India.

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates seeking admission to the PhD program must meet the following qualifications:

  1. One-year/two-semester Master’s degree in https://www.indcareer.com/en/phd-admissions/Physics/Mathematics/Astronomy/Optics/Photonics/Biophysics after a four-year/eight-semester Bachelor’s degree program with at least 55% marks in aggregate or equivalent grade, OR
  2. Two-year/four-semester Master’s degree in Physics/Mathematics/Astronomy/Optics/Photonics/Biophysics after a three-year Bachelor’s degree program or equivalent qualifications with at least 55% marks in aggregate or equivalent grade, OR
  3. Four-year/eight-semester Bachelor’s degree in Science or Engineering with 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade, OR
  4. M.Phil degree in Physics/Mathematics with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade.

A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade is allowed for reserved candidates. Students expecting to complete their final degree in the academic year 2023-2024 may also apply, provided they can produce their final scorecard at the time of admission. Reservations for SC/ST/OBC/EWS candidates will be as per Institute norms.

Application Process

All candidates are required to apply online for admission to RRI through the website www.rri.res.in. The online application process will commence only after the results of JEST, CSIR-UGC NET, and GATE exams are announced. It is anticipated that online applications will be open in March 2024. Interested individuals may register an expression of interest in advance using the link provided on the PhD programme page. In such cases, you will receive an email notification once the online application is open.

Selection Procedure:

Candidates seeking admission will be invited for an interview based on the following criteria:

  1. Performance in the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST-PHYSICS) with a valid score. For more information on JEST, please visit https://www.jest.org.in (or);
  2. Performance in any of the following tests with a valid score:
    • CSIR-UGC NET (Physics)
    • GATE (Physics)
    • GRE (Physics)

Final Selection:

The final selection of all candidates will be based on their performance in the interviews, which are tentatively scheduled to be held at RRI during May – June 2024. Call letters for interviews will be sent out around the second or third week of April 2024.
