The South Asian University (SAU) is a unique international university established by the eight member states of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). South Asian University (SAU) offers admissions to courses across the diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate levels. To apply for SAU admissions, students need to apply by filling out the online application form.

Eligibility Criteria

For B.Tech. (CSE) & Dual Degree B.Tech.+ M.Tech. (CSE):

  • Applicants must have passed the Class 12 or Higher Secondary examination in the Science stream with Mathematics and Physics/Chemistry as mandatory subjects.
  • A minimum of 75% marks in Mathematics is required for eligibility.

For M.Tech. (CS):

  • Candidates should hold a 4-year B.Tech./B.E./BSc. (Engg.)/BS degree in Computer Science and Engineering or a relevant area from a recognized institution with a minimum of 55% marks in the aggregate.
  • Alternatively, a Master’s degree in Computer Science/Computer Applications/Mathematics/Operational Research/Statistics/Electronics/Information Technology/Physics from a recognized institution with at least 55% marks is acceptable.

For Integrated M.Sc.+M.Tech. (CS):

  • A 3 or 4-year Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a relevant area with mathematics as a subject either at the Bachelor’s level or at the 10+2 (12th class) level is required.
  • Candidates with a 2-year Bachelor’s degree who have cleared the first year of the Master’s program are also eligible.

For Masters Programme:

  • A minimum of 15 years of education under the 10+2+3 pattern or a 4-year degree after 10+2 is required.
  • Applicants must have a minimum of 50% marks (or an equivalent grade) for admission to M.A. courses and 55% marks (or an equivalent grade) for admission to M.Sc. courses.

For Ph.D. Program:

  • Candidates must have completed 12 years of regular schooling and at least a 3-year Bachelor’s degree followed by post-graduate education leading to MA/M.Sc../M.C.A/MS/M.Tech./L.L.M. degree.
  • Minimum marks required are 50% for Social Sciences and Law and 55% for Science subjects.
  • Integrated Bachelor and Master degree holders are eligible if they have at least 5 years of College/University education leading to a Masters’ degree after completing 12 years of schooling.

Admission details:

  • Application process: The application process for SAU involves online registration and submission of documents through the university website.
  • Admission test: Admission for both Master’s and PhD programs is based on an entrance test followed by an interview.
  • Eligibility: Eligibility criteria vary depending on the program, but generally require a relevant Bachelor’s degree with good academic standing.
  • Reservations: SAU reserves seats for students from each SAARC member country.

Important dates:

  • Last Date for applying is 31st March 2024 (23:59 IST)
  • The Entrance Test will be held on 20 & 21 April 2024

Application and fees:

  • You can apply online through the SAU website: https://sau.int/
  • Application fees vary depending on the program and the applicant’s nationality.
  • Tuition fees are also subsidized for students from SAARC countries.

Applicable to all Programmes

  • Students enrolled in all programs at SAU must be full-time students and are not allowed to take up any full or part-time jobs during their study period.
  • Degrees obtained from government-recognized universities/institutions will only be accepted.
  • Applicants who are offered admission must provide original certificates of their final results at the time of admission, including mark sheets/grade sheets of their qualifying degree examination.
  • Candidates who have not yet completed their qualifying course and are yet to appear for their last year/semester exam may also apply for admission and appear in the Entrance Test. However, their admission will be confirmed only if they meet the minimum eligibility criteria of aggregate percentage of marks and clear the Entrance Test. Please note that such candidates will not be guaranteed admission if their results are not declared and their mark sheets are not available by the last date for admission, which is 29 July 2024. However, the last date of admission can be extended up to 14 August 2024 with a late fee after prior approval from the competent authority.
  • For further course-specific eligibility, refer to “B.Tech./M.Tech. Programmes”, “Masters Programme”, or “PhD Programmes”.

Admission Procedure

For Nationals of SAARC Countries

  • Admission to B.Tech. Programmes can be through two modes: (i) Entrance Test or (ii) JEE scores.
  • Admission to M.ASc./M.A. Programmes will be through Entrance Test.
  • Admission to M.Tech. Programme will also be through Entrance Test.
  • Admission to PhD Programmes will be done in two modes: through Entrance Test and Direct Mode. Details on admission through Direct Mode can be found under PhD Programme.
  • 50% of the students will be admitted from the host country (India).
  • At least 4% of seats are reserved for applicants from each of the five countries: Afghanistan, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, provided they meet admission criteria.
  • At least 10% of seats are reserved for applicants from each of the countries: Pakistan and Bangladesh, provided they meet admission criteria.
  • 10% of seats may be allotted to applicants from outside the SAARC region.

For Nationals of Non-SAARC Countries

  • Candidates from outside the SAARC region will be admitted based on their past performance and do not need to take an Entrance Test.
  • All such candidates must fill out an online form and upload all supporting documents, including educational records, identity proof, and a color photograph.
  • The deadline to apply is March 31, 2024.
  • Each application will be scrutinized by the concerned faculty to determine the candidate’s eligibility, and the University’s decision will be final.
  • These students are not eligible for any scholarships/freeships offered by the University and will be liable to pay US$ 4500 per semester (US $9000 per year) for day scholars, payable in July and January each year.

Application Procedure

Application Fee

  • The fee for appearing in the Entrance Test is US $10 or INR 830.
  • Applications for admission will only be accepted online, and payment must also be made through online mode.
  • An Entrance Test will be conducted simultaneously throughout the SAARC region on April 20 and 21, 2024, as per the schedule.
  • Physically challenged candidates or those with special needs should write to the University separately with a copy of their disability certificate so that special arrangements can be made for them. They will be allowed up to an extra 60 minutes to complete the test after due approvals on a case-to-case basis. Such students are required to apply for permission in advance with documentary evidence.

Schedule for Entrance Tests

  • The schedule of the entrance tests is spread over two days, three sessions each, as given below. A student can register for as many tests as s/he pleases subject to fulfilling the eligibility criteria and as long as the Entrance Test timings do not clash.
