Eligibility Criteria


Eligibility Criteria for Institute PhD Scholars:

  1. General Criteria:
    • Interested candidates must meet the minimum eligibility criteria listed below.
    • Meeting the criteria does not guarantee shortlisting or selection for admission.
    • Applications failing to meet the criteria will be rejected without refunding the application fee.
    • Minimum eligibility criteria refer to the academic qualifications required at the time of application.
    • Relaxation of up to 5% marks is permitted for SC/ST/PwD candidates over General/OBC(NCL) categories as per Government of India guidelines.
  2. Eligibility for Institute Research Assistantship or Fellowships:
    • Candidates meeting the minimum eligibility criteria are eligible for Institute Research Assistantship or UGC/CSIR-NET Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) or other doctoral fellowships offered by the Government of India (GoI).

School of Basic Sciences:

  • Master’s or equivalent degree in relevant disciplines with a minimum of 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA.
  • Minimum 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA required from Class 10 onwards with a relaxation of up to 5% marks permitted.
  • GATE or CSIR-UGC NET (LS) qualification in an appropriate discipline is required.

All Engineering Schools:

  • M. Tech./ME or equivalent degree in appropriate disciplines with minimum 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA.
  • B Tech/BE or equivalent degree in appropriate disciplines with minimum 70% marks or 7.5 CGPA.
  • Minimum 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA required from Class 10 onwards with a relaxation of up to 5% marks permitted.
  • GATE qualification in relevant discipline is mandatory.

School of Earth, Ocean and Climate Sciences:

  • Master’s or equivalent degree in relevant disciplines with a minimum of 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA.
  • Minimum 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA required from Class 10 onwards with a relaxation of up to 5% marks permitted.
  • GATE or CSIR-UGC NET (LS) qualification in an appropriate discipline is required.

School of Humanities, Social Sciences and Management:

  • Master’s degree in Humanities and Social Sciences disciplines with a minimum of 55% marks or 6.0 CGPA.
  • Minimum 55% marks or 6.0 CGPA required from Class 10 onwards with a relaxation of up to 5% marks permitted.
  • GATE or CSIR-UGC NET (LS) qualification in an appropriate discipline is required.

GATE / NET for Institute PhD Scholar:

  • Candidates receiving Institute Research Assistantship sanctioned by the Ministry of Education (MoE) must have GATE / NET in related disciplines for PhD admission.
  • Subject-wise GATE / NET disciplines valid for PhD admission are available on the institute’s website.

Application Process:

  • Online application submission through the Institute’s website: https://webapps.iitbbs.ac.in/phd-application/
  • Nonrefundable application fee payment via SBI collect or the Pay online button on the application form.

Application Fee

  • For General and OBC Candidates: Rs.500/- (Rupees Five Hundred Only)
  • For SC/ST/PwD Candidates: Rs.250/- (Rupees Two Hundred Fifty Only)
  • N.B.: Application Fee (Non- refundable)
  • USD 50 for all categories (Foreign Nationals).
  • Application fee once paid shall not be refunded under any circumstances.
  • Female candidates are exempted from payment of application fee.

Selection Procedure:

  • Short-listing based on academic performance.
  • Written Test, Research aptitude test, and Personal Interview conducted online by IIIT Bhubaneswar.
  • Final selection based on academic performance, Written Test, research aptitude, and Personal Interview.

Fellowship and Financial Assistance:

  • UGC and CSIR offer financial assistance to NET (JRF) qualified scholars.
  • Other Government Departments provide scholarships for Doctoral Programs.
  • Limited assistantships available for Odisha Domicile students for 4 years.
