PhD Programmes Admission 2014-15, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Ropar

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Ropar invites application for Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) for the year 2014 - 15. Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IIT Ropar) has invited applications from Indian citizens for PhD programs in various disciplines during 2nd semester of academic year 2014-15.

Ph.D Eligibility:

Interested candidates should fulfil following eligibility criteria:

Engineering
Computer Science and Engineering
=> M.Tech/M.E/M.S or equivalent qualification in computer science and engineering or equivalent degree with 60% marks (or 6.5 grade point out of 10) (55% marks for SC/ST)

=> However, exceptional candidates having B.Tech/B.E qualification with valid GATE score can apply for direct admission to PhD program

=> A candidate with a Bachelor's degree from any IIT and having a CGPA/CPI score of 8.00 (out of 10.0) and above are exempted from requirement of GATE qualification

Areas of Research: Activity Recognition, Pattern Recognition, Machine Learning, Pervasive and Mobile Computing, Pervasive Health Care, Assistive and Rehabilitative Technology, Cyber-Physical systems, Sensor Networks, Participatory Sensing, Wireless Networks, Energy Management

Electrical Engineering
=> First Class (or 6.5 grade point out of 10) or 60% marks in M.Tech./M.E./M.S. in Electrical/Electronics/Communications/Computer Science/ Instrumentation Engineering or Microelectronics/Solid-state Technologies /MEMS/ Nano Science/ Nano Technology/ Material Science/Engineering Physics or equivalent, relevant to the area of Research

Areas of Research:
Renewable Energy, Mixed Signal Analog and RF VLSI Circuits and Systems, Semiconductor Devices and Nanoelectroincs and Image and Video Processing

School of Mechanical, Materials and Energy Engineering
To apply for Ph.D in SMMEE, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria

i) Master's degree in Engineering/Technology or a Master's degree by Research in Engg/Technology; candidates must have obtained at least 60% marks (or 6.5 Grade Point out of 10) in their Master's; or

ii) Master's degree in Sciences with a valid score in GATE/UGC/CSIR/NET/NBHM or equivalent qualification

Candidates must have obtained at least 60% marks (or 6.5 Grade Point out of 10) in their Master's; or

iii) Exceptional candidates having B.Tech/B.E qualification with valid GATE score can apply for direct admission to PhD program

A candidate with a Bachelor's degree from any IIT and having a CGPA/CPI score of 8.00 (out of 10.0) and above are exempted from requirement of GATE qualification to apply

Areas of Research:
Bio-Medical (BM), Design & Analysis (DA), Manufacturing & Materials (MM), Thermo-Fluid (TF)

Chemistry Sciences
First class (6.5 grades point out of 10) or 60% marks (55% marks for SC/ST) in master or equivalent degree in Chemistry/Bio-Chemistry/Materials Science and Technology/Pharmaceutical Sciences/Biotechnology

Candidates meeting this requirement must also fulfill one of the following additional requirements tenable for current year

a) Valid GATE score

b) UGC/CSIR-NET qualification

c) DST-INSPIRE fellowship

Area of Research:
Electronic Structure Calculations, Quantum Dynamics, Nanomaterials, Electrocatalysis, Fuel Cell/Batteries, Catalysis and Materials Synthesis, Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Homogeneous Catalysis, Polymeric biomaterials for Drug Delivery, Inorganic and Organometallics Chemistry and Supramolecular Organic Synthesis

Mathematics
First Class (6.5 grades point out of 10) or 60% marks (55% marks for SC/ST) in Master’s Degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Physical Sciences, Engineering Sciences or equivalent Master’s Degree

Candidates meeting this requirement must also fulfill one of the following additional requirements tenable for current year:

a) Valid GATE score

b) UGC/CSIR NET qualified or NBHM or equivalent qualification

c) DST-INSPIRE Fellowship

Areas of Research: All areas of Pure & Applied Mathematics

Physics
First Class (6.5 grades point out of 10) or 60% marks (55% marks for SC/ST) in M.Sc. in Physics/B.Tech in Engineering Physics

Candidates meeting this requirement must also fulfill one of the following additional requirements tenable for current year:

a) Valid GATE score.

b) UGC/CSIR NET qualification

C) DST-INSPIRE Fellowship

Areas of Research: Nuclear Structure and Neutrino Physics, Experimental Nuclear Physics, Condensed Matter/Nano-Physics, Nonlinear Laser Spectroscopy and Biophotonics

Humanities and Social Sciences
=> 55% (or 6 grade point out of 10) in M.A./M.Sc./M.Com/ MBA with UGC-NET. However, exceptional candidates having B.Tech/B.E qualification with valid GATE score can apply for direct admission to PhD programme

=> A candidate with a Bachelor's degree from any IIT and having a CGPA/CPI score of 8.00 (out of 10.0) and above are exempted from requirement of GATE qualification to apply

Areas of Research
1) English Literature: American Studies, Cultural Studies, Gender Studies, Modern Fiction, Postcolonial Studies

2) Linguistics: Morphology, Optimality Theory, and Phonology

3) Economics: Applied Econometrics, Open Economy Macroeconomics, International Economics and Finance, Industrial and Urban Economics, Economic Geography and Regional Spillover

*In the area of Linguistics, applicants with only external funding (JRF etc.) will be considered

General Information
All selected candidates who are Indian citizens and who do not receive any other scholarship or funding will be provided financial support by the Institute Admission to reserved category candidates will be as per Govt of India notification

A limited number of Research Assistantships and other financial support for attending conferences within India and abroad are available as per MHRD norms subject to the conditions prescribed in the Institute regulations

Mode of Examination

Ph.D is Computer Based Test (CBT).
