IIT Guwahati invites applications from eligible candidates for admission to PhD programs in the Department of Chemistry and Department of Physics under a special scheme for UGC/CSIR-JRF (March 2024). Applications must be submitted online through the Application Portal. Selected candidates will be admitted under the Regular Category to avail the UGC/CSIR Fellowship. These candidates will not be considered for conversion to Institute Assistantship at any point in time.

IIT Guwahati offers a comprehensive Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program encompassing a wide range of disciplines through its various departments, schools, and centers. Some departments also provide seats under the Project Mode and for Joint Doctoral Programs (JDP) in collaboration with IIT(BHU).

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for assistantship in Ph.D. programs across all disciplines, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Possess a Master’s degree in Engineering, Technology, Medical Sciences, Veterinary Sciences, or Pharmacy in a relevant area, with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of either 6.0 or 60% of marks.
- Hold a four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Technology, Medical Sciences, or its equivalent in a relevant area, with a minimum CPI of either 7.0 or 70% of marks.
- Scholars who are selected through National Eligibility Tests – UGC NET, including lectureship (Assistant Professorship), and GATE.
- The selection process includes National level examinations conducted by MHRD and its associated agencies and institutions such as UGC/IIT/IISc./IISER/IIIT, etc. For a more detailed overview of eligibility criteria, please visit the University Website.
Application Process
Eligible candidates can apply online exclusively through the official website at https://www.iitg.ac.in. Applications must be submitted online, and you have the option to apply to multiple departments/centers using the same login. However, an application fee must be paid separately for each department/center. It is recommended to carefully review all instructions for filling out online forms on the official website before applying.

- All Female Candidates: Rs. 300/-
- All Transgender Candidates: Rs. 300/-
- All SC/ST/PwD Candidates: Rs. 300/-
- All Other Candidates: Rs. 600/- The application fee can be paid online through Credit Card, Debit Card, or Internet banking.
Selection Process
Complete applications from candidates will be considered for the selection process. The Institute reserves the right to shortlist a limited number of candidates based on their performance in GATE/NET/CEED, grades/marks in the qualifying degree examination, and other educational qualifications, starting from Class 10. For Ph.D. programs, the shortlisting and selection may be carried out on a specialization basis by the respective department/school/center.
The selection process includes assessing candidates through written tests and/or interviews conducted in various stages, with the mode (offline/online/hybrid) being determined by the respective department/school/center.
