With the Power Sector Reforms and opening-up of the Sector to Private participation, there is a great demand for the trained man power for the new Power Stations and Distribution companies set up by both the Public and Private Power companies. Weaving formal education with Industry oriented specialised skills to create a pool of technically trained manpower for ready availability for recruitment by such companies, NPTI launched one year ‘Post Graduate Diploma Course in Thermal Power Plant Engineering’ in 1996. So far 16 batches have successfully come out and those completed this course are well placed in leading companies through campus interviews. There is an overwhelming response for this course.
This course is meant for graduates holding B.E or equivalent Degree in Mechanical, Electrical & Electronics or Instrumentation & Control Disciplines.
The PGDC is conducted in a modular basis and the Programme covers the following modules:
Power Plant Description - Industrial Safety - Scheme Briefing and Tracing-Power Plant Operation - On job Training (Operation) - P.P.Commissioning - P.P.Performance - Metallurgy - Environmental Management - P.P.Protection - Load Despatch - P.P.Chemistry - Computer Application - Control & Instrumentation - Maintenance Planning & Cost Control - NDT &Welding-Maintenance practice & Inspection - On job Training(Maintenance) - Simulator - Project.

This makes the candidates to handle O&M works independently on completion of the course.
This course meets the mandatory requirements under Rule 3(2-A) of Indian Electricity Rules for O&M Engineers of large Thermal Power Stations. The holders of this Post Diploma are entitled to obtain the Power Generating Station O&M Competency Certificate from State Electrical Licensing Boards.
