International Institute for Population Sciences Admission for Ph.D in Population Studies 2013-2014

Applications are invited for admission to the full-time Ph.D. programme of the Institute with Government of India fellowship for the academic session 2013-2014. Applications are also invited from eligible UGC-JRF or any population fellowship holders for being considered for full-time admission.

No. of GOI Fellowships:
21 (Seats likely to increase). In addition, UGC-JRF and other fellowship holders will also be considered for admission as per availability of seats.

Candidates having M.Phil/Master's degree in Population Studies of a recognised university with at least 55% of marks. The upper age limit is 30 years for general candidates and 35 years for SC/ST/OBC & Women candidates as on 30.6.2013. Marks are relaxable for candidates belonging to reserved categories as per GOI rules.

The selected Indian students will be awarded a Government of India fellowship initially for one year only and is extendable on yearly basis as per rules of the Institute. Each eligible candidate with NET qualification for lecturership only either in Population Studies or its interdisciplinary subjects will be awarded the Government of India fellowship @ ` 16,000/- per month for first and second years and ` 18,000/- per month for the third year respectively. Each fellowship carries a contingency grant of ` 10,000/- for the first two years and ` 20,500/- for the third year. However, the candidates without NET qualification for lecturership shall be awarded the Government of India fellowship @ ` 12,000/- p.m. for first and second years and ` 14,000/- p.m. for third year respectively with an annual contingency grant of ` 10,000/-.

Selection Criteria:
Selection will be made on the basis of performance of the candidates in written test on research methodology, personal interview and past academic records. The
Institute gives preference to admit to its Ph.D. Programme, candidates who have M.Phil in Population Studies. Only short-listed candidates will be called for the test and interview. The Institute shall not bear any travel expense of the candidates called for the presentation and interview.

Registration Criteria:
(i) All selected candidates without M.Phil in Population Studies are required to undergo compulsory course work for a minimum of 6 (six) months.
(ii) All selected candidates are required to stay in Mumbai as a full-time student for a minimum of 2 (two) years to continue his/her Ph.D. work, failing which registration shall be cancelled.

Reservation for SC/ST/OBC/PH candidates will be considered as per the Government of India norms.

Officials working in Government departments, research institutions, universities, medical colleges and non-governmental organisations can also be sponsored for being

The completed application form along with necessary enclosures (including e-mail ID & telephone number) and a non-refundable processing fee of ` 400/- (exempted for SC/ST and PH candidates) by Demand Draft, drawn from any nationalised Bank in favour of the Director, IIPS, Mumbai should reach the Assistant Registrar (Academic) on or before 31st July, 2013. The processing fee may also be paid by cash at the cash counter and the cash receipt should be attached along with the completed application set. The Institute reserves the right to change/alter certain rules or cancel the announcement at any time.

The International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS) serves as a regional Institute for Training and Research in Population Studies for the ESCAP region. It was established in Mumbai in July 1956, till July 1970 it was known as the Demographic Training and Research Centre (DTRC) and till 1985 it was known as the International Institute for Population Studies (IIPS).
