Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. program at IIT Roorkee, candidates must meet the following minimum qualifications within their respective fields:

  1. Master’s degree with a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 6.0 on a 10-point scale or 60% marks for General, GEN-EWS, and OBC categories.
  2. For SC/ST or PWD candidates, CGPA requirements may be relaxed to 5.50 on a 10-point scale or 55% marks.
  3. A postgraduate degree in Basic Science or a graduate/postgraduate degree in a Professional Course, selected through either of the following:a. Candidates selected through National Eligibility Tests-UGC NET, including lectureship (Assistant Professorship) and GATE. b. Selection through National Level Examinations conducted by MHRD and its Agencies and Institutes, such as UGC/IIT/IISc/IISER, etc.
  4. For candidates not from Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs), a B.Tech/B.Arch/B.Pharm degree or equivalent with a GATE/GPAT/NET score and a minimum CGPA of 7.50 on a 10-point scale or 75% marks, regardless of category.
  5. Graduates from CFTIs have a relaxed minimum CGPA requirement of 7.0 on a 10-point scale or 70% marks.
  6. The CGPA or percentage of marks from all years/semesters will be considered. If the CGPA is on a scale other than a 10-point scale, proportional conversion to a 10-point scale will be applied.
  7. GATE/GPAT/JRF/NET score requirements do not apply to candidates in the ISERS or P-ISIRS category.
  8. Graduates with a CGPA of 8.0 or above on a 10-point scale from IITs are exempt from the GATE/GPAT/JRF/NET requirements.
  9. Students pursuing Master’s programs in Engineering or Architecture/Planning at IIT Roorkee with a CGPA of 8.50 or above may opt for lateral entry to the Ph.D. program after completing the first two semesters.
  10. Candidates with MBBS/BDS degrees from Indian universities/institutions must have a minimum CGPA of 6.0 on a 10-point scale or 60% in the qualifying degree and are exempt from the GATE/GPAT/JRF/NET requirements.
  11. Candidates with Master of Surgery (MS)/Doctor of Medicine (MD) degrees from Indian universities/institutions are exempt from both the minimum CGPA requirement and the GATE/GPAT/JRF/NET requirements.

For admission to the PhD programs for the Spring Semester of the academic year 2024-25, applicants must complete the online application on the official website at the following link: Application Form.

Before initiating the online application, candidates should ensure they have all the necessary documents ready for uploading.

Candidates who are in the process of completing their qualifying degrees may upload all available marksheets up to the pre-final year/semester, consolidated into a single PDF in A4 size, without password protection, and not exceeding 5 MB in size.

Application Fee

  • For General/Economically Weaker Sections (EWS)/OBC category : Rs. 200/-
  • For SC/ST/PD category candidate : Rs. 100/-
  • Mode of Payment :  Online through net banking or debit/credit card

Selection Criteria

The selection process for admission is solely merit-based and will be conducted online. Shortlisted candidates will be notified of the specified dates for a written test and/or interview by the respective Departments/Centers/Schools. These dates will also be published on the portals of each Department/Center/School. Meeting the prescribed qualifications and experience is the minimum requirement, and possessing them does not guarantee an interview invitation.
