The conference responds to trends observed in the structure, content and processes of work that have expanded the scope of international careers research and has three aims.Careers in a shifting global employment arenaA first trend the conference aims to respond to is an increasing focus on exploring how people adapt to work and build their careers in a shifting global employment arena. In most Western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic countries (WEIRD) increased outsourcing and offshoring of jobs make careers more complex and uncertain. This changing career landscape may allow individuals to shape their own career, which is captured in career concepts such as the boundaryless career, protean career, kaleidoscope career, customized career, I-deals, and the intelligent career. Yet, it also entails the higher risk of job insecurity, worse employment conditions and more precarious.
