Marine Engineering & Research Institute was established at the onset of Independence in 1947 to satisfy the growing need of marine engineers in India. The Institution earlier named as Directorate of Marine Engineering Training had its headquarter in Calcutta and a branch at Mumbai, under Ministry of Shipping (Government of India). The Institute has been renamed Marine Engineering and Research Institute in 1994.

Navi Mumbai, Marine Engineering & Research Institute (MERI) Kolkata and Marine Engineering & Research Institute (MERI),Mumbai. Candidates are admitted in these institutes for admission to

3-year course leading to B.Sc. (Nautical Sciences) Degree at T.S.Chanakya, Navi Mumbai,
4-year Marine Engineering Degree at Marine Engineering & Research Institute (MERI), Kolkata and
3-year Polyvalent B.Sc. (Maritime Sciences) Degree at Marine Engineering & Research Institute (MERI), Mumbai,
Candidates are selected through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE (Advanced)) to be conducted by IITs every year.

There is no separate Entrance Examination for admission to the above training institutes and only those candidates who have qualified in JEE (Advanced) are called for counselling in the month of July / August.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Candidates must have passed (10 + 2) examination with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English.
  • The candidates must have been born on or after 1.10.1987. For SC / ST, candidates must have been born on or after 01.10.1982.
  • Date of Birth: Candidates belonging to General & OBC Categories must have been born on or after 01.10.1987 and those belonging to SC & ST categories must have been born on or after 01.10.1982.

Offline mode:

Application form along with information brochure giving the details of the Training programme at the above three Institutes, Medical standards, etc can be obtained from the following designated branches of Syndicate Bank all over India by payment of Rs.1000 (General / OBC) and Rs.800 (SC/ST)

The application form along with information Brochure can also be obtained by post from the Indian Institute of Maritime Studies, TS Chanakya campus, karave, Navi Mumbai, 400706, by the due date by sending a self addressed envelope 11'x5" size with stamp worth Rs.35 along with a DD of Rs.1000 (General / OBC) and 800/- (SC/ST), drawn in favour of Indian Institute of Maritime Studies and payable at Mumbai.

Online mode:

MERI 2013 application form along with MERI 2013 information brochure can be downloaded from the IMU website www.imu.tn.nic.in. Such downloaded application forms are to be submitted along with the DD of 1000/- (General / OBC Category) and 600/- ( SC / ST Category ) drawn in favour of "Indian Maritime University, Mumbai Campus" payable at Mumbai.

Exam Pattern

MERI doesn't have any separate Entrance Examination, It follows the score of JEE (Advanced) Score for giving an admission. The Exam pattern of JEE (Advanced) is following :

JEE (Main) 2017 shall have two papers,
Paper-1 (B.E. / B. Tech.) and Paper-2(B. Arch./ B. Planning). Depending upon on the course (s) candidates are seeking admission, may take Paper-1 B.E. / B. Tech.), or Paper-2 B. Arch./ B. Planning), or both. Subject combination for each paper, type of questions in each paper and mode of examination available is given in the table below.

  • Exam comprises of two papers, each paper of three hours duration.
  • Papers are printed separately for English and Hindi languages, paper will be given based on the language selection done while registering for JEE (Advance).
  • Paper mainly consists of three subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics
  • Question consists of different sections like multiple choices, test comprehension, reasoning and analytical.
  • Evaluation is done on negative marking for wrong answer basis.

MERI does not conduct entrance exams. It accepts JEE (Advanced) exam score.

Admit Card / Hall Ticket

The candidate should verify all the information in the admit card. If any issue is found, then get it corrected with the concerned authority.

The candidates are required to carry the admit card to the examination hall. Without it, you will not be allowed to enter the examination hall. It is also very important to document for the further admission processes.
