Petroleum engineering is an engineering field which is concerned with the activities related to the production of hydrocarbons like crude oil or natural gas. Petroleum engineering focuses on estimation of the recoverable volume of hydrocarbons.

Petroleum engineers determine the way in which a reservoir of hydrocarbon is developed and depleted, and how they affect field economics. Petroleum engineering requires a good knowledge of many other related disciplines, such as geophysics, petroleum geology, formation evaluation, drilling, economics, reservoir simulation, reservoir engineering, well engineering, artificial lift systems, completions and oil & gas facilities engineering.

Petroleum engineers are divided in 3 categories:
=> Reservoir engineers who work to optimize production of oil and gas.
=> Drilling engineers manage the technical aspects of drilling exploratory, production and injection wells.
=> Production engineers manage the interface between the reservoir and the well, including perforations, sand control, downhole flow control, and downhole monitoring equipment etc.

Petroleum Engineers are employed as - Reservoir Engineer, Technical Support Engineer, Senior Geoscientist, Drill Bits System Field Engineer, Petroleum Technologist and Drilling Engineer. Other positions are Principal Reservoir Petrophysicist, Technical Support Specialist, Tender and Quotations Analyst, Geosciences Pressure Expert, Senior Petrophysicist, Senior Exploration Geologist, Process Engineer etc.
