Chandigarh University has decided to conduct an entrance cum scholarship test named as Chandigarh University Common Entrance Test (CUCET)<\/a> for admission to various programs so as to provide an opportunity to bright and inquisitive young minds from across the country to study in most challenging and diverse academic environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CUCET Syllabus<\/a> has been released by the authorities of Chandigarh University. Candidates can check the syllabus of CUCET 2023 to know the subjects, units and topics that have to be studied for the upcoming entrance examination. The subject-wise CUCET syllabus will allow the candidates to become familiar with the topics that they have to prepare to excel in the examination. CUCET Biology Syllabus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Unit-1: Reproduction in Organisms<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Reproduction, a characteristic feature of all organisms for continuation of species; modes of reproduction \u2013 asexual and sexual reproduction; asexual reproduction \u2013 binary fission, sporulation, budding, gemmule formation, fragmentation; vegetative propagation in plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unit-2: Sexual Reproduction in Flowering Plants<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Flower structure; development of male and female gametophytes; pollination \u2013 types, agencies and examples; outbreeding devices; pollen-pistil interaction; double fertilization; post fertilization events \u2013 development of endosperm and embryo, development of seed and formation of fruit; special modes-apomixis, parthenocarpy, polyembryony; Significance of seed dispersal and fruit formation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unit-3: Human Reproduction<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Male and female reproductive systems; microscopic anatomy of testis and ovary; gametogenesis \u2013 spermatogenesis and oogenesis; menstrual cycle; fertilisation, embryo development upto blastocyst formation, implantation; pregnancy and placenta formation (elementary idea); parturition (elementary idea); lactation (elementary idea).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unit-4: Reproductive Health<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Need for reproductive health and prevention of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs); birth control \u2013 need and methods, contraception and medical termination of pregnancy (MTP); amniocentesis; infertility and assisted reproductive echnologies \u2013 IVF, ZIFT, GIFT (elementary idea for general awareness).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unit-5: Principles of Inheritance and Variation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Heredity and variation: Mendelian inheritance; deviations from Mendelism \u2013 incomplete dominance, co-dominance, multiple alleles and inheritance of blood groups, pleiotropy; elementary idea of polygenic inheritance; chromosome theory of inheritance; chromosomes and genes; Sex determination \u2013 in humans, birds and honey bee; linkage and crossing over; sex linked inheritance \u2013 haemophilia, colour blindness; Mendelian disorders in humans \u2013thalassemia; chromosomal disorders in humans; Down\u2019s syndrome, Turner\u2019s and Klinefelter\u2019s syndromes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unit-6: Molecular Basis of Inheritance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Search for genetic material and DNA as genetic material; Structure of DNA and RNA; DNA packaging; DNA replication; Central dogma; transcription, genetic code, translation; gene expression and regulation \u2013 lac operon; genome and human and rice genome projects; DNA fingerprinting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unit-7: Evolution<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Origin of life; biological evolution and evidences for biological evolution (paleontology, comparative anatomy, embryology and molecular evidences); Darwin\u2019s contribution, modern synthetic theory of evolution; mechanism of evolution \u2013 variation (mutation and recombination) and natural selection with examples, types of natural selection; Gene flow and genetic drift; Hardy \u2013 Weinberg\u2019s principle; adaptive radiation; human evolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unit-8: Human Health and Diseases<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Pathogens; parasites causing human diseases (malaria, dengue, chickengunia, filariasis, ascariasis, typhoid, pneumonia, common cold, amoebiasis, ring worm) and their control; Basic concepts of immunology \u2013 vaccines; cancer, HIV and AIDS; Adolescence \u2013 drug and alcohol abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unit-9: Strategies for Enhancement in Food Production<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Improvement in food production: Plant breeding, tissue culture, single cell protein, Bio fortification, Apiculture and Animal husbandry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unit-10: Microbes in Human Welfare<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In household food processing, industrial production, sewage treatment, energy generation and microbes as biocontrol agents and bio fertilizers. Antibiotics; production and judicious use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unit-11: Biotechnology \u2013 Principles and processes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Genetic Engineering (Recombinant DNA Technology).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unit-12: Biotechnology and its Application<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Application of biotechnology in health and agriculture: Human insulin and vaccine production, stem cell technology, gene therapy; genetically modified organisms \u2013 Bt crops; transgenic animals; biosafety issues, bio piracy and patents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unit-13: Organisms and Populations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Organisms and environment: Habitat and niche, population and ecological adaptations; population interactions \u2013 mutualism, competition, predation, parasitism; population attributes \u2013 growth, birth rate and death rate, age distribution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unit-14: Ecosystem<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Ecosystems: Patterns, components; productivity and decomposition; energy flow; pyramids of number, biomass, energy; nutrient cycles (carbon and phosphorous); ecological succession; ecological services \u2013 carbon fixation, pollination, seed dispersal, oxygen release (in brief).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unit-15: Biodiversity and its Conservation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Concept of biodiversity; patterns of biodiversity; importance of biodiversity; loss of biodiversity; biodiversity conservation; hotspots, endangered organisms, extinction, Red Data Book, biosphere reserves, national parks, sanctuaries and Ramsar sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unit-16: Environmental Issues<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
