The aim of this Sewa Panthi (society for humanitarian service to mankind without any discrimination) was to assist wounded soldiers in the battlefield and to provide food, clothing and shelter to the needy, regardless of religion, caste, race, creed, national origin, sex or status. The word ‘Seva’ means service and the word ‘Panth’ means a path. This was the first organized mobile corps of good samaritans in the entire world. The most amazing part is that unlike the Red Cross, founded 160 years later, there were no salaries provided to the people rendering the selfless service.
