GATE 2016 will have 23 papers (instead of 22 earlier). A new paper Petroleum Engineering (PE) is introduced in GATE 2016.
A candidate is allowed to appear in ONLY ONE paper.. Candidate can choose any paper, where they have required eligibility criteria.
Each GATE examination paper will be of 3 hours duration which contains 65 questions carrying a maximum of 100 marks, out of which 10 questions carrying 15 marks in General Aptitude (GA) are compulsory.
General Aptitude (GA-15 Marks) is common for all the engineering branch ( Civil-CE, Computer Science-CS, Information technology-IT, CE, Mech, EE, ECE, IN.
GATE 2016 is an ONLINE Computer Based Test (CBT) where the candidates will be shown the questions in a random sequence on a computer screen. The candidates are required to either select the answer (for MCQ type) or enter the answer for numerical answer type question using a mouse on a virtual keyboard (keyboard of the computer will be disabled). Candidates will be provided with blank paper sheets for rough work and these have to be returned back after the examination. At the end of the 3-hour window, the computer will automatically close the screen from further actions.
GATE 2016 would contain questions of four different types in engineering papers: :
- Multiple choice questions: This section carry 1 or 2 marks each. Common data questions, where two successive questions use the same set of input data.
- Numerical answer questions: In this section the answer is a number and it has to be entered by the candidate using the mouse and a virtual keypad that will be provided on the screen.
