The college was started in July 1945 initially, by offering the B. Sc. (Ag.) Programme. Postgraduate programmes were started from the year 1968 and now the college offers M. Sc. (Ag.) in various disciplines. Doctoral degree programme was started in the departments of Entomology, Plant Pathology and Plant Physiology from the year 1992-93.
The Agricultural College, Bapatla, is the second oldest agriculture college in South India. Established in 1945 (affiliated to Andhra University at that time), it offers various courses in agriculture including Ph.D. programme. Last year, B-Tech in Food Science was also introduced. The college is currently affiliated to the Acharya N.G Ranga Agriculture University, has produced several eminent personalities over the years.
The batch of students graduating from the Bapatla Agricultural College in 1970 is special, because 1970 was the “Silver Jubilee Year” of the college. The 1970 batch distinguished itself with several graduates achieving prominence such as Mr Alfred Oliver, Executive Secretary, All India Christian Council; Mr P. Koteswara Rao, Inspector General of Andhra Pradesh Police; Dr M.V.K. Sivakumar, Chief of the Agricultural Meteorology Division in the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in Geneva, Switzerland; Mr C.R. Agricultural College, Bapatla was started on 11th July 1945 by the erstwhile Government of composite Madras State on the recommendations of the Post War Reconstruction Committee. It is the oldest among 12 Agricultural Colleges in Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University (ANGRAU). It was started with the aim of imparting Agricultural education for under graduate students and to turn out the Agricultural Graduates to man various post war reconstruction schemes.
The College was affiliated to Andhra University on the recommendations of Late (Sir) C.R. Reddy, Leader, and Inspection Team to the College and was under the administrative control of the Directorate of Agriculture of erstwhile Madras State. Andhra Pradesh Agricultural University (APAU) was established June 12, 1964. Since then, the college expanded rapidly both academically and physically with the addition of postgraduate and doctoral programmers. Many infrastructure facilities were added in terms of buildings and equipment for improvising the academic status in Agricultural Education. The College celebrated its Silver Jubilee during 1970-71, Golden Jubilee during 1994-95 and Diamond Jubilee during 2006.
