RESEARCH FOCUS OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Department is equally strengthened with both experienced and young faculty members with vast research experience and credible publications. The Department is seriously engaged in research on
Marine Microbial Diversity
Secondary metabolites from marine organisms
Marine Bioproducts and Bioprocess Technology
Quorum sensing, probiotics and bioplastics
with a core theme of “bioactive molecules from marine resources”. List of ongoing and completed research projects. We are also maintaining a Culture Collection Centre to preserve marine microorganisms which were isolated and characterized in our Department by both our post graduate students and research scholars. Totally we are maintaining 745 marine associated bacteria, 372 marine actinomycetes and 45 marine associated fungi. The Department also has research collaborations with seven Research Institutions both in India and abroad such as University of Boros, Sweden; ARMATS Biotek, Chennai; Plant Pathology Division, UPASI TRF TRI, Valparai; CAS in Botany, University of Madras; Al Ameen College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Bangalore; Arulmigu Meenakshi Amman College of Engineering, Kanchipuram and Vel Sri Ranga Sanku College (Arts and Science), Chennai (Details of collaborative research activities). The Department also runs an Out-sourcing Unit for bacteria identification using 16 S rRNA sequencing. We are establishing to have Memorandum of Understandings with a academic institution and a Biotech Industry in India.
