West Zone Inter University Handball Women Tournament kicks off

West Zone Inter University Handball (Women) Tournament 2016-17 organized by The IIS University, Jaipur in collaboration with Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi kicks off on Saturday. International Athlete, Padmashri, Shri Ram Singh was the chief guest in the inaugural ceremony.

The Inaugural session commenced with welcome note by Dr. Ashok Gupta, Vice-Chancellor of The IIS University. He motivated the students and told the players to keep sports spirit intact without getting affected with winning or losing. Dr. Ratnesh Kashyap, Director, University Sports Board congratulated the players and told them to do their best on field. Ritika Bishnoi, captain of The IIS University Handball team took oath to promote fair play.

A total of 13 matches were played on the first day of the tournament. In the morning session, the first match was played at Sawai Man Singh Stadium between Devi Ahilya Univ., Indore and Dr. B A M Univ., Aurangabad in which Devi Ahilya team won by 20-2 and player Roshni grabbed 4 goals. In the second match, player Lalita Yadav grabbed 10 goals to make her Banasthali University team win over Barkatullah Univ., Bhopal by 16-9. Third match was played at The IIS University campus between Dr. Harisingh Gour Univ., Sagar and Univ. of Rajasthan in which Rekha with 8 goals helps University of Rajasthan team to defeat Dr. Harisingh Gour Univ by 0-21. Univ. of Kota, Kota gave a tough fight to Central University of Rajasthan to won by 11-8. The IIS University got walk over since ITM University, Gwalior didn’t turned up in the ground. The last match of the morning session was played between M.L.S. Univ., Udaipur and Gujarat Univ., Ahmedabad and M.L.S University registered win by 13-6 goals.

A total of 7 matches were played in the evening session out of which 2 matches were played at the IISU ground while rest of the matches were played at SMS Stadium. The first match was played at The IIS University ground between P D U Shekhawati Univ., Sikar and Saurashtra Univ., Rajkot in which Saurashtra University’s player Bhoomi stole the match from PDU by grabbing 8 goals. Rani Durgawati University, Jabalpur easily defeated Solapur with 14-1.

Jiwaji University, Gwalior loses to Shivaji University, Kolhapur by 13-0. Sardar Patel University, Vallabh Vidyanagar while defeating MDS University, Ajmer won by 20-4. RGV Bhopal loses to MGS, Bikaner by 22-1 and Kachchh University, Bhuj defeated Kadi Sarva University by 14-0.

    Bangalore's Jain University won againsts the hosts Jamia Millia by two runs to win the Toyota University T20 championship on Sunday night. Jain University's 19-year-old Shreyas Gopal's all rounde performance got them the coveted trophy. Gopal scored unbeaten 83 and took 2 wickets while bowling leg-spin. At the end Shreyas Gopal was declared as Man-of-the-match. 5 runs were needed in the last over by Jamia to win, but they could only score 2 runs.
