S.S. Dempo College of Commerce & Economics hosted the 13th Dempo Charities Trust’s Educational Institutions Joint Sports Meet recently at the sports ground at Santa Cruz.
The overall championship under Higher Secondary School category was bagged by Dempo Higher Secondary School of Commerce with 175 points and the overall championship under College category was bagged by Dhempe College of Arts and Science with 171 points.
Anthony Falerio from Dempo Higher Secondary School of Commerce was awarded as Higher Secondary School boys champion. Tanvi Vargaonkar from Dempo Higher Secondary School of Commerce was awarded as Higher Secondary School girls champion. Abdul Rahim from Dhempe College of Arts and Science won the award in the College Men category. Monteiro Bencia from Dhempe College of Arts and Science won the award in the College Women category.
The four educational institutes under the aegis of the trust, Voicuntrao Sinai Dempo Higher Secondary School of Commerce, Dempo Higher Secondary School of Science, VasantraoDempo Higher Secondary School of Arts and Science, Dhempe College of Arts & Science and S.S. Dempo College of Commerce & Economics participated in the mega sports event which saw a participation of over 200 enthusiastic students and faculty members.
Students battled it out for the top spot in the competitive on-field athletics events. Athletics events for boys and girls of the Higher Secondary’s and of the Colleges included sprints in the 100 mts, 200 mts and 400 mts category. Additional events such as Shot Put, Discus Throw and a 4x100mts relay took place.
Students teamed up with faculty members for some of the competitive sports events. To encourage participation in sports while also making it entertaining, a few fun events and races were held.
“It gives me great joy that our institution had the opportunity to host the 13th Joint Sports Meet of Dempo Charities Trust’s Educational Institutions. This event was a great opportunity for the students and faculty members to display their athletic skills and also display team work. The true spirit of sportsmanship was displayed for all to see and I hope the students have excelled to the best of their abilities. This unity amongst the Dempo Charities Trust’s institution will go a long way in ensuring that the city institutions do well in every academic, Sports and co-curricular activities” said Radhika Nayak, the Principal of S.S. Dempo College of Commerce & Economics.
“India has a vast population and very few gold medals. Once upon a time, India was the topper in Hockey. Now we don’t get any medals in hockey. This is the right age for students to think about taking up sports as their career so we can generate some more Tendulkars and Paeses. I wish all the
students a good future’ said Yatish Dempo, Trustee, Dempo Charities Trust.
The sports event coincided with the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the host college, S.S. Dempo College of Commerce & Economics.
S.S. Dempo College of Commerce & Economics was founded in the year 1966 and is celebrating 50 of imparting education to the students of the state.
