S.S Dempo College of Commerce and Economics is celebrating its Golden Jubilee this academic year 2015 – 16. To mark the celebration of completing 50 glorious years of its imparting knowledge and good values to students, the college has planned a series of lectures. To mark the start of the Golden Jubilee lecture series, S.S Dempo College of Commerce and Economics will host veteran politician, economist, author and columnist Sitaram Yechury as a special invitee to deliver a talk and interact with students and the people of Goa on 30th January at Institute Menezes Braganza Hall, Panaji.
The veteran politician and economist who is a member of the Rajya Sabha and the General Secretary of the Communist Party of India - Marxist (CPI-M) will deliver a talk on the topic ‘Bad Politics has made for Worse Economics in India’ followed by an interactive session.
A parliamentary group leader of the CPI-M and a politburo member of the party for over four decades, Yechury is one of the most prominent voices of opposition in the Rajya Sabha and is credited for raising questions on important issues of national interest.
Yechury has had an impressive educational track record from the time he joined Presidents Estate School, New Delhi and topped the all – India ranking in the CBSE Higher Secondary Examination. Subsequently, he studied B.A. (Hons.) in Economics at St Stephen’s College, Delhi and M.A. in Economics, from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), achieving first class in both. He joined the JNU for a Ph.D. in Economics, which was aborted with his arrest during the Emergency, where he played a significant role. An ardent sportsman, he was also captain of the lawn tennis team in University.
A prolific writer, he has authored nine books and writes the fortnightly column Left Hand Drive for the Hindustan Times.
The Dempo College Golden Jubilee Lecture Series will see celebrated achievers across various fields share their thoughts and interact with audiences in an effort to intellectually stimulate the minds of students and the general public.

S.S. Dempo College of Commerce & Economics was founded in the year 1966 and is celebrating 50 of imparting education to the students of the state. S.S. Dempo College of Commerce & Economics was the first institution to offer higher education in Commerce, which was then established in the newly liberated Union Territory of Goa, Daman, and Diu. Generations of young educated minds have passed out through its doors and reflect the excellence of education they have attained in the institution. To commemorate the Golden Jubilee Year, the management of S.S. Dempo College of Commerce & Economics has meticulously planned out a number of activities through the year.
