~Goa’s first autonomous college, Chowgule College hosted former Captain of the Indian Hockey team and Arjuna awardee Viren Rasquinha, who led the contingent in the 2004 Summer Olympics. ~
Chowgule College, celebrated its Founders Day at the college campus with former Captain of the Indian Hockey team, Viren Rasquinha today. The internationally celebrated Olympian interacted with the students of the institute sharing with them his experiences and personal stories.
Viren Rasquinha, one of the biggest stars of Indian Hockey, is an Olympian and the former Captain of the Indian Hockey team. He was a member of the Indian team that finished seventh at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. He was bestowed with the prestigious Arjuna Award for Hockey in the year 2005. In a career spanning from 2002 to 2008 he played 180 International matches for the Indian Hockey team.
Known to be an immensely gifted midfielder and an excellent team player, he has been highly praised for his fearless tackling skills, tireless running and calm temperament. Viren announced his retirement from hockey on 15 January 2008 to pursue management studies at Indian School of Business, Hyderabad at a young age of 28. After completing his MBA Viren joined the Olympic Gold Quest and is currently the CEO of the same.
Addressing the gathering on the occasion of Founder’s Day Viren Rasquinha, former captain of Indian Hockey team and CEO Olympic Gold Quest engaged the audience with stories from his life and those of the athletes he meets and works with. Said Viren,“It is always important to create an environment conducive to excellence only then can we move forward and do better. One should always give their 100% no matter what and always stay strong as a team. And lastly, everyone big or small has an important role to play in whatever you’re doing. Take pride in whatever you do, understand your potential and make the best of it.” Concluding his speech he went on add, “Always have courage and fire to follow your passion. Defeat is not the end, always come back stronger and give it your best shot”
Founder’s Day celebration is an annual fixture on Chowgule College’s calendar of events. Regarded as one of the pioneer of industrialization in the state, Sri Vishwasrao Chowgule fought against the odds to create what he believed in. A philanthropist at heart, he founded Smt. Parvatibai Chowgule College in the year 1962. He had a clear vision for the college and was committed to advancement in the field of education. Founded in memory of his
mother, the college was inaugurated by a woman, the then External Minister Mrs. Lakshmi Menon on 23rd June 1962. Since then the college has come a long way under the able guidance of the trustees of the Chowgule College Society and has achieved numerous milestones in the field of education, sports, academics and cultural events.
To mark the celebration of Founder’s Day, every year, Chowgule College, Goa, gives away special awards to the staff members and students who have contributed their dedication and hard work towards betterment of the college and society. Dr. Sanjay Gaikwad received an award for Excellence in Research & Consultancy, Mr. Sachin Moraes for Outstanding Performance in extracurricular activities related to students. The award for Best General Administration and Accounts was given to Shri Anirudh G.S. Kunde and Shri Shekhar D. Gaude received an award for the best support staff. The prestigious Hira Wagh Award was presented to Shweta S. Gaonkar for all round excellence in academics, extracurricular activities and sports.
Said Dr N.N Sawant, Principal, Chowgule College, “Dr Bhausaheb Bandodkar complimented Shri Vishwasrao Chowgule saying that he does everything first and the rest follow suit. The college is no exception to this rule. Chowgule College is the first college to be established in Goa, it’s the first college to get a NAAC accreditation, the first to include computer studies in their curriculum and recently we have the honour of being the first college in Goa to be conferred the Autonomous status”. He concluded the speech by saying, “there is a lot of competition that will follow, we cannot rest, we have to keep moving faster and be the differentiators.”
Chowgule College has taken the initiative of inviting extraordinary individuals who have gone on to be achievers in their own fields and can inspire the staff and students with their stories. Chowgule College has over the years invited various achievers from across the country to interact with its students. ChetanBhagat, Nandita Das, ViswanathanAnand, GeetSethi, Agnelo Dias and Milkha Singh among others have been speakers at the college.
