Odisha to get its first Women University.

Odisha state is all set to get its first University exclusively for Women. Rama Devi Women's College, Bhubaneswar will be given the status of university, thus becoming first women's university in the state. Central government will release a lump sum of Rs 55 crore for the infrastructural development of the university.

"The Rashtriya Ucchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) which is sponsored by the Central government has accepted Odisha government's proposal regarding this", said Pradeep Panigrahi, Odisha's higher education minister

Other women colleges that has been functioning under Utkal University will now move to this new Women's university. The state government has also made the decision to introduce more courses in these new universities.

A proposal in this regard was submitted by the State government to the Union ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). The Project Approval Committee (PAC) of the ministry has cleared the proposal in its meeting chaired by Union Higher Education secretary Satyanarayan Mohanty in Delhi recently.

    While addressing a written reply in Lok Sabha, Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani has confirmed that All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has approved an engineering college exclusively for women. This engineering college will come up in Thane. "According to the information furnished by the All India Council for Technical Education, it has approved one women's engineering college during the academic year 2014-15 in the name of 'New Horizon Institute of Technology and Management'," she said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.

    Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik inaugurated Xavier University in Nijigarh in Pipili Tahasil of Puri district (Near Bhubaneswar). "The recent IIT Council proposal on admissions to IITs is academically and methodically unsound and in violation of the Institutes of Technology Act (1961) and IIT Kanpur Ordinances (Ordinance 3.2 (Admissions)," said the IIT Kanpur committee members.
