A discussion forum on ‘Listen to Your Child’ was recently organised by the Department of Psychology, Chowgule College, Margao at their college premises.
Dr. Belinda Muella, Psychiatrist, Ms. Brenda D’cruz, Principal of Manovikas School, Vishwanath Swar, Professor at M.E.S. College and Advocate Prasanna Timble, Professor at Kare College, Mrs. Almeida, Former Principal of Kings School were invited as chief guests for the event.
The audience was welcomed by Kavita Borkar, HOD, Psychology Department, Chowgule College followed by a Bharathnatyam dance recital by Vaishnavi Pai Kaveode while Chandani Asolkar, Tanya Kevi, Gretchen Barretto, Ranjit Warren performed a number on Never Grow Up. The event was well attended by the principals and vice principals from other institutions.
Each of the speakers gave a presentation on the theme, ‘listen to your child’ where they spoke about talking to children, understanding their problems by listening and not hearing, making them aware of abuse children suffer today.
Dr. Belinda Mueller spoke on how parents often misunderstand their children. Principal Brenda D’cruz said that parents should spend quality time with their children. She spoke about the influence teachers have on their students and the ‘dos and donts’ when it comes to dealing with them.
Vishwanath Swar spoke about the various activities he conducts for children. These activities help them feel comfortable with each other and thus instil in them a sense of self confidence. Advocate Prasanna Timble spoke about the rights of a child to be listened to.
This was followed by a question-answer round wherein many from the audience put forth questions based on sexual education and the mentality of parents on such a topic.
