Goa Institute of management recently organized a seven day Healthcare Professional Development Programme on 'Healthcare Management and Managerial Effectiveness' at its campus in Sanquelim. The global health scape is fast changing with the new challenges of competition, emerging new formats in health services. Effective management is about doing the right things at the right time.

The program was designed for the top and mid-level healthcare professionals to provide innovative and practical solutions for critical management challenges. The seven day programme aimed to help strengthening the capabilities of the healthcare professionals, with an emphasis on critical assessment of current and future policy options and issues.

The one week programme was inaugurated by Mr Ramakant Khalap, Former Union Law Minister in the presence of Dr Harish Sihare, Programme Director and Associate Professor, Goa institute of Management (GIM).

The program shared insights on how today’s dynamic environment and rapidly changing face, organizations need professionals who are not only efficient but also effective. The responsibilities of professionals and the dynamic environmental pressures on them have increased their need to be effective. However Healthcare Government officials in managerial roles in various healthcare government department and institutions are senior clinicians or professionals without management education with vast clinical experience and promoted to managerial positions by virtue of their seniority.

Managerial training is not compulsory before taking up senior positions, even though managerial knowledge, skills and competencies are absolutely necessary for such positions. Know-how of Human Resources, Materials, Finances, Legal issues, Communication and Interpersonal relations etc is absolutely important for efficient management practice, which are grossly found to be inadequate and is reflected in the performance and productivity of the Healthcare Institutions.

The program at GIM received participation from senior healthcare professionals from across the country who took back with them managerial knowledge and techniques which can be applied in day to day functioning.
