Panaji,March 2013: As part of the ongoing Golden Jubilee celebrations, Parvatibai Chowgule College of Arts and Science, Margao, will be hosting Professor Sugata Mitra who will deliver a talk to the faculty members and staff on the ‘Future of Learning’. Professor Sugata Mitra is in Goa to speak to teachers at St Joseph’s High School, Vasco and Chowgule College.
Best known for his ‘Hole in the Wall’ experiment, Professor Sugata Mitra recently won the one million dollar TED Prize for the year 2013. TED is a nonprofit devoted to ideas worth spreading. It started out as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: technology, entertainment, design. Dr. Sugata Mitra is a long-term educationist and a scientist of international repute. He has over 25 inventions and first-time applications in the areas of Cognitive Science, Information Science and Education Technology, to his credit. Dr. Mitra has been the Chief Scientist at NIIT and is currently Professor of Educational Technology at Newcastle University, UK.
In an experiment conducted first in 1999, known as the Hole in the Wall (HIW), a computer was placed in a kiosk created within a wall in a slum at Kalkaji, Delhi and children were allowed to use it freely. The experiment aimed at proving that kids could be taught by computers very easily without any formal training. The experiment has since been repeated at many places. Hole in the Wall today, has more than 23 kiosks in rural India.
Dr. Mitra is a winner of "Man of Peace Award" from Together for Peace Foundation, USA, and "Social Innovation Award" from Institute of Social Inventions, UK. He was also conferred the "Dewang Mehta Award" by the Government of India in recognition for his work related to the Hole-in-the-Wall project.
Professor Sugata Mitra will deliver a talk on 22nd March 2013 at the Chowgule College auditorium.
