Ten-year term for college principals, suggests UGC

A panel appointed by University Grants Commission (UGC) has recommended 10-year term for principal of colleges. Presently college principals have 5 year term.

Minister of State for Human Resource Development (HRD) Shashi Tharoor informed that a committee, appointed by UGC has recommended 10 years as term for appointment of college principal. While recruiting a principal the total experience required will be reduced to ten from fifteen years.

The main reason for these changes cited by UGC committee is to bring young and dynamic people into mainstream so they can implement new ideas and methods.

    Dr Ambedkar College and many well wishers of late YCMOU vice chancellor R Krishnakumar have instituted a gold mdeal in his name to recognize his contribution to the educational sector. Dr. R. Krishnakumar died on 21st January 2014 at the age of 51. The medal will be presented to 'best principal' of Nagpur University. Rs 1.5 lakh has been handed over to NU Vice Chancellor Vila Sapkal by the Ambedkar college managment.

    Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) has planned to increase the yearly package of its Director to Rs 1 Crore, a five fold increase from Rs 20 lakh. The new package will help in attracting the best minds to head the institute. Board of Governors (BOG) have already made up their minds to give approval to increasing package hike. Samir Barua's term ended in November, 2012 but has been given extension till next director is appointed.

    Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) is all set to increase the yearly fees by 80% for undergraduate courses. The fees will be increased to RS 90,000 annually from Rs 50,000. The final decision will be taken by the IIT Council on Monday. This hike was recommended by IIT Standing Committee. A government panel has recommended to increase the fees to Rs 2 - 2.5 lacs yearly. HRD Ministry has supported the idea to increase the fees of IITs to match those of Indian Institute of Management (IIMs). IIMs presently charge around 3 times that of IITs.

    Union Minister for Human Resource Development (HRD) Kapil Sibal rejected all the three candidates shortlisted by a search-cum-selection committee for the appointment of Vice-Chancellor in Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). The minister said that the selected candidates are not 'ideal' for the top post. According to sources, many eminent people from prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) were not considered.
