In 1975 a full-fledged Department came up during the tenure of Prof. Malcolm Adiseshiah as Vice-Chancellor. The two-year M.A. Course was started and M. Phil and Ph. D. programmes were also begun. One of the strengths of the Department has been the emphasis on fieldwork.
