Shrimati Indira Gandhi College has its origin in the long cherished desire of the National College Council to establish a college exclusively for Girls, to overcome the woefully inadequate provision for the Higher Education of Women , that existed in the town till the Eighties, with no college for women having been started for the last three decades and many deserving and intelligent girls being denied the privilege of Collegiate Education. We could not make much headway owing to the ban on the opening of new colleges. The decision of the Government of Tamil Nadu to permit the opening of Self – Financing colleges came as a timely encouragement .The Founder Secretary Shri.. K. Santhanam along with the president of the National College Council Sri Y.Venkateswara Dikshidar , Ex – M.L.A, moved the State Government and the then Chief Minister “Puratchi Thalaivar” Dr.M.G.R was pleased to accord permission for starting college, on 1-10-84. Spacious class rooms with sophisticated furniture specially designed in modern management style to facilitate easy interaction in the class room and audio system meet the quality demands of the course. Syndicate rooms, a well furnished conference hall with built in audio and video systems, film projects, slide projectors, OHP, V.C.R, LCD and tape recorders are used to make the curriculum interesting and informative. The college was named Shrimati Indira Gandhi College in respectful remembrance of our dynamic former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and was formally inaugurated by our former president and most illustrious alumnus of National College, His Excellency Shri. R.Venkataraman, the then Vice-President of India on 17th Nov ’84. His Excellency was pleased to visit the college once again on 25th March ’87, to unveil the size statue of Indira Gandhi installed near the western gate of the college. It was this statue of Indiraji, that was garlanded by her illustrious son and successor – Prime Minister Honb’le Rajiv Gandhi on 6th August ‘88during his visit to Tiruchirappalli.
