Description

Sido Kanhu Murmu University was previously known as Siddhu Kanhu University. By an Act of Bihar Legislative Assembly, the University was established on 10th January 1992. When the state of Jharkhand was created the University was renamed as the `Sido Kanhu Murmu University` by an amendment made in the Jharkhand State Universities Act 2000. This University was separated from the Bhagalpur University (which is now known as Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University) and made a separate university. The University is affiliated to the Association of Indian Universities. It is located in Dumka in Jharkhand.Situated in the tribal dominated area of Santal Parganas and with its headquarters at Dumka, the second capital of Jharkhand, Siddhu Kanhu University (SKU), now known as Sido Kanhu Murmu University (SKMU), was established with effect from 10th January, 1992 by an Act of Bihar Legislative Assembly published in the Bihar Gazette (Ext. Ord.) dated 05 March, 1992. [Ref. Bihar Universities (Amendment) Act 1991 Bihar Act, 1992]

The university has been named as "Sido Kanhu Murmu University" (SKMU) by an amendment made in the section 3(1) of the Jharkhand State Universities Act 2000 (Amendment) vide Notification No. LG - 16/2002 - 15/Leg. dated 06.05.2003 published in the Jharkhand Gazette (Ext. Ordinary Edn.). It was carved out from Bhagalpur University now known as Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University.The university was recognized by and affiliated to the Association of Indian Universities vide its letter no. Meet/67 - AM/93/20588 dated 06.05.1993. It was granted recognition under Section 12 (B) of the UGC Act, 1956 in May, 2007. S.K.M. University is situated in one of the most backward areas of the country dominated by the Santhals and the Pahariyas. Named after Sido and Kanhu, the two great martyrs of Santhal Hul of 1855, who manumitted the aborigins – the Pahariyas and the Santhals and also other dwelling in this region from he exploitation by the money-lenders, Zaminadars as well as the persons enjoying powers, S.K.M. University, Dumka was established with the aim of providing facilities for higher education and research in the Santhal Parganas where the facilities were poor or none. Even then, within the limits and constraints, S.K.M. University has been serving the purpose for which it was established, admirably, by bringing about a social and educational revolution in the Santhal Parganas.

The University provides undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in arts science and commerce. Doctoral degrees are also awarded in the faculties of Social Science, Humanities and Science.
