The Joint Admission Board of Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) on Wednesday decided to implement the OBC reservations in a phased manner from this year in the IITs.

The Directors of seven IITs, Ministry of HRD and other representatives of key institutions were present at the meeting.

It is known that from the coming academic session onwards, seven IITs shall implement the OBC quota. This year the reservation will be 9% for OBCs and the full 27% quota will be achieved in 2010.

27% QUOTA in New IITs from this Year only

However, the three new IITs in Bihar, Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan, which start operations from the coming session, will implement the entire 27% OBC quota in one go.

For OBC students, the cutoff has been fixed at 90% of the cutoff for general category students.

In IIT Delhi, there are 556 posts for teachers as of now. About 300 more teachers will be required by 2010. The requirement could be similar in all other IITs.

The seven IITs at Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Mumbai, Roorkee, Guwahati and Chennai will also be increasing the number of seats by 13% this year so that the 9% OBC quota can be implemented without changing the number of seats for the general category students.

The three new IITs will have 120 seats each, of which 49.5% will be reserved. These IITs will be ‘mentored’ by IITs at Delhi and Kanpur.
