The Sarup Rani Government College for Women, Rani ka bagh, Amritsar (Punjab), was established in 1932 and got recognition from the UGC under 2(f) and 12(B) since beginning. Affiliated to G.N.D. University, it is an urban institution with a sprawling Campus covering 14.62 acres. The College has 22 departments covering the faculty of Arts, Science, Commerce and Home Science. Faculty of Arts comprises seventeen departments. Faculty of Science has six and Faculty of Commerce has two departments. The institution has Honours Courses in 5 subjects. The College offers three programmes at postgraduate level. This college enjoys a reputation of being a model college in the region in discipline traditions and in educational standards. It is therefore a much sought after institution for female students and is in fact preferred over any other women college in the city. For the over all development of personality, the college offers opportunities for a healthy exposure to a variety of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. To encourage the students in their academic, cultural and extra-curricular pursuits a number of scholarships medals, trophies prizes and certificates are given to meritorious students every year.
The College has 22 departments covering the faculty of Arts, Science, Commerce and Home Science. Faculty of Arts comprises seventeen departments. Faculty of Science has six and Faculty of Commerce has two departments.The institution has Honours Courses in 5 subjects. The College offers three programmes at postgraduate level. The institution has four useful vocational courses. Out of 92 teachers, 83 are permanent positions. Remaining 8 are part-time teachers.One holds D.Litt. Degree, 28 are Ph.Ds. and 30 are M. Phils. The College is efficiently run with the help of 38 members of administrative and technical staff. The students enrolled in these courses are 2345, all from the same state.
Enrolment in the vocational courses is 194 while 50 students have been admitted to the Certificate course. Student enrolment in PG Diploma is 10 while in Music and Geography have an enrolment of 51.Percentage success rate at the undergraduate level have been 95.4 and 98.7 in 2001-2002 and 2002-2003, respectively which is quite impressive. At P.G. level the success rate is still higher. The Drop out rate is within 5%.
The College has an inbuilt mechanism to check the work efficiency of the non-teaching staff. The College conducts professional development programmes for non-teaching staff. The various welfare programmes are run by the college. The College has a grievance redressal mechanism. The major concern of this is to solve the problems of teachers and students alike. The offices and departments are governed on the principle of participation. Academic and administrative planning in the institution move hand in hand. Management technique and technologies, to the extent possible, are used by the institution for efficient running of administrative and decision making.
The finances of the institution are judiciously allocated and effectively utilized to make its programmes and functioning cost-effective. Budgeting and auditing procedures are regular according to the rules and regulations of the Government of Punjab. The college has an efficient internal coordinating and monitoring mechanism. The welfare schemes are provided to the staff as per the Govt. norms. The college has planned and submitted proposals for further development of the institution keeping future needs in view. For efficient co-ordinating and monitoring, different committees have been constituted. The working of different departments in monitored by the principal in consultation with the heads of deptts, who supervise the working of their respective deptts. The clerical staff working in the office keep a record of all the incoming and outgoing mail and is supervised by the office superintendents. The working of junior laboratory assistants and lab attendants is monitored by senior lab attendants under the supervision of the heads of deptts. For overall administration of the college there is a staff council, which co-ordinate the different duties and functions. Finances are being monitored through the Bursar of the college.
