The Department’s research interests include theoretical and experimental fields. In theoretical Physics, research is conducted in High Energy Physics, Nuclear Physics, Statistical Physics, Liquid Crystal, Nonlinear Dynamics, Astrophysics and Quantum Mechanics. Experimental researches are conducted in areas including Nanomaterials, Polymers, Electronics and Remote Sensing.
Outstanding faculty have helped to shape the Department of Physics at Presidency. They include stalwarts in Physics such as Sir J.C. Bose, Surendranath Maitra and P C Mahalanobis. It was J.C. Bose, the physicist, who laid the foundations of experimental science in this country. Before him there was hardly any tradition of experimental research work in India. The department was also enriched by the contributions of distinguished scholars such as E. P. Harrison. Snehamay Datta, Kuleschandra Kar, Rajendralal Sengupta, Amal Kumar Raychoudhuri, Samadendra Nath Ghosal, Shyamal Kumar Sengupta, Bijay Shankar Basak and many others.
