Situated at the outskirts of the historic and culturally rich city of Lucknow, the Indian Institute of Management, (IIML) was established in 1984 by the Government of India as a national level school of excellence in management science.

IIML's mission is to be a global, socially conscious and integrated school of management, contributing towards management development, both in India and abroad. Towards this, IIML undertakes a diverse range of academic activities and interventions aimed at creation, dissemination, and application of management knowledge and practices. These include : the Postgraduate Programme; the Fellow Programme; the Management Development Programme; Research Programmes; and Consulting Programmes. IIML is also entering into collaborative arrangements with leading business schools and research centres in India, Europe, Canada, South and South-east Asia.

The Institute has state-of-the-art computing and classroom facilities, supported by an extensive library of books, journals, films, and databases. IIML academic programmes are fully residential. The serene and pollution free campus is well equipped to meet all the essential requirements of its residents.

In order to meet its objective to help improve the management of the corporate and non-corporate sectors, IIML undertakes a diverse range of academic and professional activities. These include the following :

Postgraduate Programme: For providing educational facilities to train young men and women for careers in management, primarily in the corporate sector.

Fellow Programme in Management: For providing high quality education to scholars for pursuing careers as teachers, researchers, trainers and consultants in management.

Research Programmes: For strengthening the knowledge base relevant to practice of management in India. Besides research in the corporate sector, the Institute has also made major commitments for working in the non-corporate sector.

Management Development Programmes: For improving the decision-making skills and administrative competence of practising managers and developing awareness in them of the management practices that are most suited to the Indian context.

Consulting Services: For solving problems in the various kinds of organisations spread over different sectors of economy and upgrading the management practices in them.

Publications: To disseminate new knowledge generated through various research projects and case studies and to strengthen the knowledge base in management in the context of Indian industry and business. Agenda for the future

Programmes The programmes conducted by the Institute are :

Postgraduate Programme (PGP) It aims at providing educational facilities to train young men and women for careers in management, primarily in the corporate sector. Admissions are held through the Combined Admission Test to the two-year full-time course leading to the award of Postgraduate Diploma in Management, equivalent to a Master's degree in Business Management.

Fellow Programme in Management: Doctoral level programme, aims at training and developing scholars for distinguished careers in teaching, training, research and consulting in management. The programme aims to provide integrated view of management as a discipline while at the same time allowing students to focus on specific functional areas of their choice.

Management Development Programme: It is designed to enable top, senior and middle management personnel in public and private sectors as well as senior administrators working in diverse fields in the government to improve the quality, efficiency and effectiveness of the services they provide in times to come. Training inputs provided to the participants attending the programmes contain a good blend of sound theory and practice. These Management Development Programmes have been very well received by the industry and the Government.

Postgraduate Programme

The Postgraduate Programme (PGP) in management is designed to develop professional managers who can shoulder varied organisational responsibilities in different sectors of our economy. The objectives of the programme are to enable its graduates to :

understand the socio-economic, political, technological and ecological environment of the modern societies and their characteristic values; acquire the prevailing state-of-the art knowledge and skills in the basic disciplines and functional areas of management; develop analytical and innovative attitudes and skills so as to facilitate and manage change and increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the organisational systems; develop values and proactive attitudes towards societal problems and its well being.

The PGP is a two-year, full-time, residential programme. The students completing the programme requirements are awarded the Postgraduate Diploma in Management of the Institute. The Diploma has been recognised by the All India Council for Technical Education as equivalent to a Master's degree in Business Management from an Indian university. PGP Programme details - Curriculum

The curriculum is designed to impart knowledge and skills considered essential for managers to operate successfully in the increasingly dynamic and complex environment. It sharpens and deepens the student's understanding at different levels:

The individual in the organisational setting;

The environmental context of the organisation;

The dynamics of organisational functioning; and

The analytical tools and techniques required in the management of organisation effectively

Understanding the interdependent nature of organisational dynamics and its managerial implications is the basic thrust of the curriculum. It helps the student acquire conceptual and analytical abilities required for making and implementing managerial decisions effectively.

The First Year academic work, spread over three terms, is a compulsory package of 22 foundation (core) courses designed to provide basic knowledge of concepts, tools and techniques in various functional areas and relevant disciplines.

The two-month compulsory Summer Training in industrial and business organisations follows the first year course work. The summer training is aimed at providing exposure to the real life working environment. Students are required to work on specific, time-bound organisation related assignments

The Second Year academic work, spread over three terms, comprises two compulsory courses of integrative nature along with a package of 15 elective courses of advanced and applied nature. These provide students the opportunity to develop in depth understanding and concentration in the areas of their special interest. The students can also take up to two Courses of Independent Study (CIS) as elective, or one Dissertation Project which is equivalent to two elective courses spread over Term-V and Term-VI.

The entire package of courses is regularly reviewed, modified, updated and augmented keeping in view the industry requirements, latest developments in the specific subject areas and changes in the social and geopolitical scenario that impinge on the management practices.

The programme is designed as an integrated whole to generate maximum synergy among its components. The internalisation of knowledge, rather than its mere acquisition, is emphasised.

Sensitisation and capacity to deal with environmental influences is stressed, both as a means of enhancing organisational well-being as well as promoting good corporate and professional citizenship. A high degree of training with the use of emerging managerial tools and technologies is imparted to the students.

The programme aims at generating among the students the capability of 'learning to learn' in recognition of the importance of continued learning for a successful managerial career. The programme endeavours to nurture a social system which is conducive for inculcating the value system appropriate for a professional manager in the Indian context.

Accordingly, a combination of appropriate instructional methodologies is employed depending on the nature of the course. The basket of teaching methods employed includes lectures, case discussions, exercises, seminars, role plays, management games, assignments, term papers, project work, audio-visual aids and computer-based learning methods. Financial Assistance

The objective of the Institute's Financial Assistance Schemes is to provide adequate financial aid opportunities, so that no student is prevented from pursuing the programme due to financial constraints. The schemes presently available are:

IIML Scholarships: IIM Lucknow has instituted scholarships for up to 15% of the student intake based on merit and family income. Any student, including those belonging to the reserved category, whose total annual family income does not exceed Rs.1,50,000/- is eligible for consideration of these scholarships.

Industry Sponsored Scholarships: There are several industry sponsored scholarships available which are awarded at the end of each academic year based on merit. The value of these scholarships presently ranges from Rs. 6,000/- to Rs. 75,000/- per annum. The benefactors are: Hindustan Lever Ltd. RCI, Aditya Birla, Ratan Tata, Citibank, EXIM Bank, Central Bank of India, Apeejay Trust.

Merit-cum-Means Scholarships: The Government of India Merit-cum-Means scholarships of Rs. 2200/- per annum are available to a maximum of 25% of the students subject to their satisfying the stipulated means and merit criteria.

SC/ST Scholarships: The Government of India SC/ST Scholarships of Rs. 1500/- per annum are available to all SC/ST students admitted to the programme. Deserving candidates are also eligible for scholarships, from their respective State Governments, covering the non-refundable components of the fees and maintenance charges, depending upon family income. Rules regarding these scholarships are available at the Institute.

Loan Schemes: The Institute has made arrangements with banks, financial institutions and charitable organisations, to provide loans for all needy students to finance their educational expenses at IIML. The agencies who have developed loan schemes for IIML students include Central Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Allahabad Bank, State Bank of India, HDFC and the P.D. Agarwal Foundation.

Fellow Programme in Management (FPM)

It is a full time residential programme. The normal time span for completing the requirements of the programme is four years. Accordingly, students are required to stay on campus for four years. The programme involves two years of course work followed by two years of research work. The following features have been incorporated in structuring the programme:

The programme aims to provide an integrated view of management as a discipline while at the same time allowing students to focus on specific functional areas of their choice.

Inter disciplinary research with a focus on problem solving is particularly encouraged.

The students are expected to contribute to the existing state of knowledge through continuous self learning and research under the guidance and supervision of individual faculty members/ advisory committee.

Students may get an opportunity for carrying out advanced course work at other IIMs for which collaborative efforts are in progress. For carrying out advanced course work or cross country comparative research work, students may be provided with international exposure. The programme has the following requirements:

Mandatory course work Comprehensive Examination Dissertation work leading to the formulation of thesis proposal for Doctoral level research Thesis work. Management Development Program (MDP)

The objective of MDP is to help improve the management system in the industry by providing relevant training to managers at all levels. The focus of all activity at the MDP block is to give the participants the perspective required to revolutionise the way industry functions. Learning from MDP is passed on to the PGP by means of case analyses of real life problems faced by participants. This in turn helps create managers who are aware of and ready to take on the challenges faced by industry. Number of programmes have been conducted for forestry sector officials, civil servants like IAS, IFS, IPS, and IES, and for the employees of non-governmental organisations. Agriculture Management Centre (AMC)

Agriculture Management Centre (AMC) has been established at Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow for providing expert advice to implementing agencies of Agricultural Development Projects for improving the effectiveness of the projects. Besides, it aims to generate knowledge of efficient management of farm sector through field-based research leading to suitable policy interventions and imparting training to development administrators, policy makers and corporate managers. The Centre focuses on field-based research to improve the productivity of farms to bring rural prosperity that can lead to improvement in the quality of rural life through prioritisation of resource allocation, efficient and effective management of productive resources through farming system approach in a sustainable manner. At present, the Centre is providing consultancy services, primarily on monitoring and evaluation to the Uttar Pradesh Diversified Agriculture Support Project (UPDASP) funded by the World bank. This project is to be launched in 70 districts of Uttar Pradesh, covering areas like agriculture, sericulture, horticulture, rural markets, rural roads and animal husbandry. With the start of the AMC, the Government of India has associated with the Institute in preparing the Manual for Monitoring and Evaluation of National Agriculture Technology Project (NATP) which has been started in six states - Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Himanchal Pradesh, Orissa, Maharashtra and Punjab.

Centre for Leadership and Human Values

Research studies have established that leadership is the most salient factor in the development as well as decline of any institution. The Centre recognises the reality of leadership crisis in all forms of organisations and socio-cultural, political institutions. In order to meet this global challenge, the Centre for Leadership and Human Values aspires to promote :

Fostering the task of nation building through values- based leadership. Creation of an international forum for managers, administrators, political leaders and diverse professionals to articulate multiple perspectives on leadership. Appreciation of multidisciplinary approaches to leadership theory and practice. Personal and organisation transformation through leadership education The Centre seeks to aim, through the promotion of values-based leadership the creation of new knowledge about leadership and the development of new curricula to generate and support, ethical, visionary and effective leadership.
