Girls outclass boys in ISC, ICSE exams

NEW DELHI: Girls have once again outclassed the boys in the Indian School Certificate (ISC) Class XII and the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) Class X examinations.

The results were declared by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations here on Wednesday.

“In ISC, the pass percentage of the girls is 98.18, compared to 96.21 of the boys,” said Additional Secretary and Officiating Chief Executive and Secretary of the Council Gerry Arathoon. At the ICSE level, girls have secured a pass percentage of 98.14, while the boys attained 96.90 per cent. In the examinations for Classes XII and X, fewer girls were unsuccessful.”

The overall pass percentage for ISC and ICSE this year is 97.08 and 98.05, respectively. For Class XII, this has gone up by 0.04 percentage points from last year, while the percentage point increase for Class X is 0.01.

The ISC examination was conducted in 47 written subjects, of which 13 are Indian languages and six are foreign languages. The ICSE exam was held in 66 written subjects, including 19 Indian languages and 14 foreign languages.

As many as 52,552 candidates — including 23,345 girls — appeared for the ISC examinations, while 108,217, including 47,405 girls, wrote the ICSE examinations in March this year.

In India, the Southern region has the highest pass percentage — 97.78 per cent — in the Class XII exam, followed by the Western region that boasts a pass percentage of 97.69 per cent.

With a whopping 99.14 per cent, the Western region is leading in terms of pass percentage for Class X. The Southern region is close behind at 98.66.

At both the ISC and ICSE levels, foreign schools have done very well with pass percentages of 98.04 and 99.52, respectively.

The Southern region also has the distinction of having the highest percentage entry of girls in both Class XII (48.55 per cent) and Class X (47.80 per cent).

As many as 1,007 Scheduled Caste and 1,406 Scheduled Tribe candidates took the ISC examinations this year.

The highest aggregate marks among the SC and ST candidates, 96.50 and 96.75 per cent respectively, have been achieved by girls.

Among the Other Backward Classes, 3,083 candidates appeared in the ISC examination.
