The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) was established on 14 September 1972 in the name of the Regional Medical College. It is situated in a picturesque locality at Lamphelpat in Manipur, India. The objective of this premier institute is to impart quality medical education and ameliorate the health condition of the seven states of North Eastern Region including Sikkim. It is run by a society named "North Eastern Regional Medical College Society" which was duly registered under the Manipur Societies Registration Act, 1989.The campus of the Institute occupies 192 acres (0.78 km) of land and comprises 881 bedded hospital and 25 major departments including super specialties with an extensive area of residential campus for the staff and adequate hostel accommodation for the students.Regional Institute of Medical Sciences Imphal heads the list of the eminent colleges and institutes in Manipur. Established on 14th September in the year 1972, the college aims to provide thorough medical knowledge to the students of the institute. The college is also dedicated in ameliorating the health conditions of the state of Manipur and the other North Eastern states.
The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal was first established in the name of Regional Medical College which was later altered to North Eastern Regional Medical College in the year 1976. It was in the year 1995 when the general body of the medical society of the north eastern states decided to rename the college as the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal. The college works under the aegis of the North Eastern Regional Medical College Society which is itself registered under the Manipur Societies Registration Act, 1989.
The Institute was formally inaugurated by the then Hon’ble Chief Minister Md. Alimuddin on 26 September 1972. It was later renamed as North Eastern Regional Medical College (NERMC) on 1 August 1976. The College was affiliated to the Manipur University in November 1980. Previously it was affiliated to the Gauhati University. Postgraduate Degree courses were opened in 14 disciplines including Diploma in pathology in the year 1980. The 11 th Special General Body Meeting of NERMC Society held on 4 February 1995 renamed NERMC as "REGIONAL INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES, IMPHAL" (RIMS) w.e.f. 1.4.1995
